Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Hypothyroid and miscarriage?

My doctor decided it was time to do some testing after one D&C and a chemical pregnancy. One thing she has seen so far is that my thyroid is slightly off...said I have a hypo thyroid. So, until my appt with my internist, I am on a low dose of synthroid...not happy about that cause I think this is something I will always have to take. Anyway, does anyone have any experience with this and have any info they can share with me?  Thx

Re: Hypothyroid and miscarriage?

  • I have hypothyroidism and have been on levothyroxine for about 2.5 years.  You need to be sure your thyroid while not PG is between 1 and 3.  It will go higher when you are pg(they told me) but they still will monitor it so it doesn't get too high.  Did they do a CD3 bloodtest on you?  That may give more insight about the quality of your eggs etc.  Not too sure how old you are though.  They did mine last year when I was 34.

  • I have hypothyroidism and have had a miscarriage.  My endocronologist says that your thyroid plays a huge part in pregnancy and in most functions in your body.  When I started this pregnancy my thyroid was low, so he put me at .55 synthroid, now I have been moved up to .125 dosage.  He told me that my thyroid is pretty bad and he says if I don't take care of it then your thyroid can cause miscarriages.  It is a problem that most women do not know about, but can be dealt with pretty easily with a pill.  Unfortunately you have to take them the rest of your life.  I am sorry about your loss, good luck in the future.
  • Just wanted to tell you ladies that I used to have hyperthroidism (about 15 years ago).  I was treated for about a year and a half (T3 & T4 hormones) and my body readjusted itself and became 'normal' again.  I had to check my thryoid levels every 6 months and then eventually annually.  I checked before I got pregnant too.  With medication, it's an ok thing to have (I mean there are worse things....)

    Sorry for your loss.

  • I have had 2 m/c's that I think were attributable (at least in part) to subclinical hypothyroidism.  I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease in which your body attacks your thyroid and eventually causes it to fail.  After my second m/c, I had a full panel of tests, including tests for antithyroid antibodies (the only way to diagnose Hashimoto's), and my antibodies came back elevated even though my TSH was technically within "normal" limits.  I am now on 75 micrograms of Synthroid and pregnant again (and crossing my fingers!).  It is very important to check your thyroid levels each trimester of pregnancy, as your dose may have to be adjusted.

Don't be too discouraged by the diagnosis--it is an easy thing to fix, and taking the medication daily  just becomes part of your life.  I highly recommend seeing an endocrinologist, though, especially if you're also trying to get pregnant again--they deal with this every day and are up on the latest research and published literature.  Good luck...

I have had two miscarriages, one a chemical and the other a partial molar pregnancy.  I have had thryoid issues for for three years now. I ended up having a total thyroidectomy last June and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.  At any rate, my first miscarriage was before the thyroidectomy and my endocrinologist thought it was just a fluke (my levels were ok), my partial molar in December was also not related to my thyroid levels.

I do have them checked every six months also, and they did check my levels every trimester when I was pregnant with DD.  I just started taking synthroid last year, and while I will have to take it for the rest of my life, things could be worse.

    Good luck to you.

  • I took Synthroid for many years but stopped taking it when it became too annoying trying to adjust the dose based on my on-again, off-again birth control issues.  Clearly, I shouldn't have taken it upon myself to stop taking it, but whatever.  Last year, I brought it up to my doctor, was tested and told that my thyroid levels were fine.  Go figure.  I did mention it to my ob/gyn and he said they that normally monitor thyroid levels anyway.

  • I am hypothyroid and take 125mcg a day, which is a relatively high dose.  With both my pgs, my thyroid levels were tested almost immediately and were fine.  My doctor has not in anyway seemed to suggest or state that my thyroid issues were the problem.  That may change  as I go through RPL testing, but I don't know.

I've always been under the impression that if your numbers are good and stay stable, you're fine.

  • I have Hyperthyroid and I was told by a High Risk Ob that in the early stages of Pregnancy it is not your thyroid that causes miscarriages.  He made it very clear that is was not my Graves disease that caused my miscarriage.  He was very insightful to all of my fears on taking medication while pregnant seeing as there are studies to support that it crosses the placenta.  Talk to your endocrine and OB too.
