"Orphan" the movie...interesting email I received from an agency we're considering

  "Orphan" - the movie
Help stop this film from being released!
EAC felt it necessary to forward this notice to all of our adoptive familes.  We hope that you will take the time to speak out against this film and the message it sends.  EAC has already expressed their stance, that this film should not be realeased, to the companies listed below.

As posted on JCICS
.org
There is a horror film being released on July 24, called Orphan, about a family who adopts an older girl who "is not what she appears to be." The film is currently being promoted, and the trailer is available at https://orphan-movie.warnerbros.com . The adoption message is extremely negative, and plays into the stereotypes of adopted children, particularly older children, as damaged.
Though we have not been able to preview the entire movie, the trailer leads us to believ e the movie will send a horrific message about adoption. The adoption community is protesting the release of the film. We urge you to contact the makers of the film, as well as your local movie theater chains, with your concerns. Feel free to copy or adapt the sample letter below.

To whom it may concern:

I want to express my outrage about the release of the movie Orphan. The film plays into the stereotype of adopted children as damaged and dangerous. It discourages families from pursuing adoption, particularly adoption of older children, who are especially in need of loving homes. As an adoptive parent, I am horrified by the line in the trailer that "it must be hard to love an adopted ch ild as much as your own." Adoption has often been misrepres ented in the media, but the previews for this film are unbelievably offensive. I urge you to change the promotional materials, and to consider holding the release of the film altogether.

I just wanted to share this email.

  • My husband & I went to see a movie last night & they played a preview for this movie.  It was absolutely horrible.  I could not believe that they would say some of the horrible, stereotypical lines that were in the movie.  I am not one to be easily offended ever, but this movie hit a nerve.  I was especially offended by  the line stated in the letter above-- "It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own."

  • You know - I don't agree with these kinds of 'protests'. I hate when some group (yep, even when it's adoption) gets on a high horse and chooses which topics in society they want to 'save' that day and who it is that they will beat up to try to prove their point on that day. The movie may be crap and horrible but so are a lot of movies and tv shows.

What about ALL of the movies and tv shows that stereotype, in a negative or malicious light, people of other races, gays and lesbians, surrogacy (remember the movie Baby Mamas - totally NOT a good representation of the surrogacy process or the people who go on such journies) and so forth.

I particually don't like an agencies that gets involved in such hollywood-political issues. There are better areas that they can focus on - like going to capitol hill and getting better legislation in place for adoption and fostercare and better tax rules. I would very upset if my agency used MY money for staff time and potentially advertising time to protest hollywood.

    Just my opinion.

  • i saw the previews for this movie last night as well (rach, were you seeing The Hangover? :) )

I don't like the idea of this movie - the subject OR the ideas it portrays to the public. it's also a scary movie, so i'm out on that anyway.

  • Here's the link to the post I made similar to this last week...I have recieved several emails about it lately. I don't have an opinion yet, I'm on the fence about it.

I am not going to see the movie though because I'm not a fan of horror films.

  • Definitely at The Hangover.  :)
  • This movie is probably a hunk of junk full of negative stereotypes, but this is a First Amendment issue to me.  I tend to vote with my wallet on stuff like this, rather than draw more attention (and give free publicity) to the purveyors of crap.  Like Jacks said, there's tons of crap out there for the public consumption.

I'm actually more fascinated by the fact that Peter Sarsgaard is in it.  This guy trots around NYC in scarfs and vintage clothes like he's some kind of serious artiste - then signs on for drivel like this.  Did anyone see him in Flightplan?  Rendition?  Ugh.  Fire your agent, bro.

This clunker is directed by the guy best known for "House of Wax."  Fear not, ladies.  I predict this movie will be dying a slow, painful death on Netflix queues within 90 days of release.

2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!
