Is there something like a BBB for doctors?

A new doctor took over our last doctor's practice.  (He left to take over the ER).  I've heard nothing but complaints about her, but this one takes the cake.  DH went in to see her for an update on how his medicines are working.  When the nurse asked about them, she said the wrong name of the medicine, and only had one written down instead of two.  DH told her that the doctor had changed the Rx's at his last appointment.  The nurse could find nothing in the chart about it.  When the doctor came in to see him, she was a little bit miffed about the whole deal, almost as if she didn't believe DH that she had changed them.  While it isn't a huge deal as far as DH is concerned (because is is aware of what he is taking), what if it that had happened to an elderly person or someone on a bunch of different meds?  I suppose it would have been caught at the pharmacy.  If this were a one-time accident and she was a great doctor otherwise, I wouldn't think anything about it.

I am not going to see her and I'm going to find a different doctor for Nora.  I assume Dh will want to change, also.

  • You can file a complaint with your state's medical board.  I always check our doctors there - they will list any complaints against them, etc.

  • If this dr. is practicing with a health system, there should a few levels you can complain too. I would start with the clinic's office manager or the patient services rep is for that clinic (or that dr.). Most have a peer review committee that reviews these complaints. You can write directly to the VP of medical affairs or patient affairs also. If this is an independent practice - file a complaint with the state medical board.

  • Well, if your DH has been taking a prescription that was written by her then she can't get miffed about forgetting that she changed it...the proof is in the script.  If she failed to chart then that's her problem.  She could have sent dictation and it's possible that it was not documented in his chart...that would be the transcriptionist's fault.  Complaints can't be made to the state's licensing board.  They have a review committee and will handle legitimate complaints.

  • you should also complain to your insurance company - since they have that doc on their plan... if they get enough complaints often they will remove someone from a plan.
