When is a child considered potty trained?

Is it after so many days of no accidents or is there some other criteria? Can a child be 'pee' trained but not 'poop' trained? I know that it can take longer to be potty trained overnight, so I'm not even taking that into account here. DD has been in panties for about 48 hours now except overnight. She had 1 teeny 'pee' accident yesterday and had a 'poop' accident today (fwiw, she has still never pooped on the potty). She also wears panties during her naps and has been waking up dry. I don't think that I consider her PT'd just yet, but I think that she is really close. What do you consider the criteria for being officially 'Potty Trained'. Thanks!

Re: When is a child considered potty trained?

  • I think a child is potty trained when they are in underwear 24/7.

  • honestly? When I don't have to worry about it anymore. I don't think there's a real "scientific" criteria for it...

  • After my kids spent about a week in underwear with minimal accidents, I considered them trained.  Like pp said, when I didn't feel like i needed to worry about it as far as leaving the house, etc.  In that sense, DS was trained a month before he turned 2, because he would tell me when he had to go, but he couldn't do his pants or anything on his own yet.  I had to go with him every time, but he was trained in my mind because he told me every time.  I don't think nighttime counts because he still wets at night, and lots of kids do up through age 6 or 7.  That's more developmental and something they don't have conscious control over.  DD however, trained at 27 months and was dry at night within a couple of weeks.  Just depends on the kid.

  • I'd say when they don't need diapers during the day, including nap time, and less than one accident a week. Because that would be enough to let them into any program/pre-school that requires them to be PT'd.

And really there's no "training" to the night-time part is there? You just have to wait until they are developmentally ready (I think). I know some of my friends kids are wearing underwear during the day for up to 2 years before they stayed dry consistently at night.

  • I consider DD potty trained.....but she is still wearing pull-ups at night.  She was waking up with very wet diapers still so I didn't push the night training.  However, for the past week she's had dry diapers and she's waking up and going to the potty.  So we are going to start doing underwear at night probably starting tonight.

  • I don't know if there is any set answer. I considered Jack pt'd when he was free of accidents for day and night and would go to the bathroom when he had to go.
  • I felt like DD was "potty trained" when we could resume our regular schedule (being out and about) without fearing accidents or having to pee RIGHT. NOW. with no warning.

Except for random accidents she was pee trained in 1.5 days, poop trained in a week, and night trained in about 2 weeks.

Now she's getting to the point where she will go pull down her pants by herself and go when she needs to, though she needs help wiping and re-dressing.  And she wears underwear 24/7.  I consider that trained.
