A way to test fertility at home?

I'm reading my Summer 2009 issue of Shape magazine and there is an article called " a new way to test your fertility"  It's called First Response Fertility Test ($25 for 2).  Its the first at home screen to measure your follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) which stimulates the production of eggs.  You place the stick in your urine stream and, in 30 minutes, you'll know whether you have a normal or high level.

Has anyone seen or used these?

I haven?t seen them, but there is something similar on amazon. I can?t really imagine that it would be all that helpful. I think you really need a blood test on a certain day and it?s usually compared to your other hormone levels to get an overall idea. All I know is that FSH levels alone are not enough to say that your egg supply is dwindling according to my doctor.

  • I was very skeptical when I was reading this, b/c I agree and don't know how accurate those could really be.  Another way to make $$$.  :)

  • I saw these at Target when I was there buying OPKs.  If I'm not pg this cycle I'll probably buy them so I have something to pee on when CD3 rolls around.

  • Over a year ago I used the at home Fertell kit, which tests for the FSH level in the female and then the sperm motility in the male - it was likst $100 at CVS.  The results are very basic and not detailed - basically based on the shade/line in the result window you know if your ovarian reserve is poor or normal ... with the male kit you find out if his swimmers are slow or normal.  The kit is by no means a difinitve answer or even 100% accurate.  This new kit out by 1st Response is testing the female FSH and is probably similiar to the original at home kit, Fertell.  It was a good start to find out where we stood, but the real answers came from the RE.  I must say the Fertell kit was accurate though, as my test came back as normal and DH's test came back as slow swimmers - and that is what the professional s/a and blood tests said at the RE.

  • It only tests FSH, there could be a wide range of other issues so the test should be taken with a grain of salt.
