How to know if baby is dehydrated?

J has been spitting up more then normal today and his last diaper had a strong smell to it, could he be dehydrated? He is having the same number of wet diapers as before though.

Re: How to know if baby is dehydrated?

  • When he cries he wouldn't have tears and his fontanels would be sunken in.  Plus, you'd probably hav 2 or more dry diapers in a row.

  • If he's having a normal amt of wet diapers, he's not dehydrated.  Often when they are, the inside of their mouths will be dry, and if extremely dehydrated, their soft spot will sink in.  If you think the strong smelling urine is something to worry about, there's no harm in calling the ped, though.
  • I think if he isnt producing any wets then that is a good indication.  He may have a UTI.
  • My pedi said that 6-8 wet diapers is what you need to look for, and that if they produce less then normal you need to worry. Does your LO have any other signs of dehydration (dry skin, chapped lips, ect.)?
