Crab meat while preg - Yes or No

I have read as many articles online that said yes as there were that say no.  I know raw or undercooked shellfish is a big no, but what about well-cooked like in crab cakes or crab legs?

  • I ate it. I was never told no shellfish, just no raw oysters, etc.

  • I love crab, so I've been eating it!
  • According to the American Pregnancy Association, it is safe to have 6 (6-oz) servings of Dungeness crab per month, and King crab is safe to have twice a week.  :)

  • If it's cooked, I don't see why not. ?I haven't ever read anything about crab being high in mercury. ?I've had crab while I've been pregnant.

Now I'm hungry for Maryland crabcakes. ?Thanks. ?;)?

  • My OB said all shellfish is fine, it's low in mercury.

  • Awesome.  Thanks for the feedback.

I am totally having king crab legs this weekend--mmmmmmmmmm.

Why not!  As long as it is cooked it is just fine.  Shellfish is low in mercury and delicious!

  • Depends on the kind of crab to be honest. I know soft shell and Dunganess are low in murcury but there is one kind you should only have in sparing moderation, like less than once a month.
  • I hope it's OK...nothing I read said anything about cooked shellfish being off-limits. I just had a crabcake a week ago and I've had a few this pregnancy. I think it's fine - my OB said no raw food.
  • I'm a pescatarian so I eat a lot of fish.  Shellfish is actually the lowest in mercury.  It's safe!

  • I'm in a lot of trouble if it's not ok. A lot of trouble.

Actually, I've probably only had it 5-6 times but still, I've been uber vigilent about not eating stuff that is on even the questionnable list and have never seen it as a no- no.
