Baby Names

Anastas i? or y? a

Okay so my bf picked out our baby girls name. ?I am just fine with it, but I was informed on Monday that he wants to spell it

Anastasya instead of Anastasia.

He said he doesnt want the Disney spelling..he knows she will be disneyed out with me around! LOL.

I think its cute(not that I would admit that to him, lol, cause i thought itd look ugly) but would you be confused if you saw it with a "y" and try to pronounce it a different way then what it is??

Re: Anastas i? or y? a

  • Don't do it! Anastasia is not the Disney spell. It's the classic normal way to spell it.

I've said it a million times, and i'll say it again! Just b/c the name is spelled differant doesn't make the name any differant, and doesn't make your child any more special. So save you baby the headache and spell it the right way.

My name is Rikki and I wish my parents would of just spelled it Ricky b/c everyone spells it like that anyways.

So even if you spell it Anastasya she is still Anastasia.

ditto this. Anastasya just looks like you spelled it wrong.

  • I really don't like it with the Y. It makes me think it's a different name with a different pronunciaton.

  • I would spell it with an i not y

    I agree.?

  • You know the movie wasn't a Disney movie, right? It was by Don Bluth, the same guy that did An American Tale. And it was about an actual historical figure, not a fictional mermaid or anthropmorphic lion cub.

Also, there was a Disney character named Anastasia, but not one most people know by name, and I sincerely doubt anyone would ever name a child with her in mind. Ugly stepsisters don't usually merit namesakes.

Spelling it with a Y looks silly, and it would make me think you were doing it to prompt the more European pronunciation. (AHH-nuh-STAH-zee-uh instead of the more familiar Anna-stay-zha.)

  •  Honestly, it doesn't look cute spelled with a 'y', it just looks like you can't spell.
  • I don't like the whole Y instead of I trend, makes it look like you can't spell.

Anastasia doesn't look Disney to me, Anastasya looks like you're trying too hard to be unique though

  • no no..spell it with an i or else she's just going to have to constantly correct people and spell out her name.

  • Yeah it definitely depends on how you want it pronounced. My niece is Anastasia, pronounced Anna-Stacey-Uh. I would probably pronounce Anastasya that way, but personally I think my niece's looks like it shoudl be pronounced "Anna-staija" (if that makes sense).

Me too...when you spell a name "wrong" people automatically think that you or your parents are less educated...it can be a hindrance in school and in the job market.

  • Anastasia is a name most people are not going to know how to spell anyway. This board sometimes forgets that a very large population of our country (more people than visits this website), while considered literate, cannot read or write very well at all, let alone spell.

That being said I don't think it should deter you from using the name. I too prefer Anastasia spelled with an 'i' opposed to an 'y.' However, there are appropriate "rules" to changing a traditonal name to make it unique by using spelling, and one of them is taking the traditionally spelled name and changing one 'i' in the name to a 'y.'

I know many of you are going to scoff at the above idea and perhaps even say I'm making this *** up. But those of you who invest in baby name books rather than purely look online know what section I am talking about. And it is very clear that you can only change ONE little element of the name, not butcher the entire thing.

So, if you love the spelling Anastasya, don't worry about people who have an 'i' to 'y' pet-peeve.

All of this.  Plus the "y" would make me more likely to misprounounce and mispell it.  I would pronounce it anna-stahz-ya.

While this is true, by spelling a name incorrectly you're portraying yourself as one of those people. Is that really what the OP wants?

  • In my humble opinion

Superfluous uses of Y make people look ignorant, as do intentional misspellings of traditional names

No Please don't spell it with a y, that's just not nice, and it makes you look illiterate.
