Anyone have fibroids?

I posted last week about my sister having another m/c (her second since Jan.) She had some testing done today and she has a fibroid the size of a softball. She has not talked to the dr. yet about her options, but of course she's on the internet researching (as am I.)

Just wondering if anyone here has had any surgeries to remove fibroids? Did you have trouble TTC after that?

?

Re: Anyone have fibroids?

  • My sister had one the size of a grapefruit by the time it was discovered.  They first put her on some meds that basically put her body in menopause (hot flashes and all!) to deprive the fibroid of hormones and shrink it.  Then they tried to operate going in vaginally so they wouldn't have to cut open her abdomen, but as soon as they were in with the scope it was obvious that if they removed it that way it would damage her reproductive organs.  So they rescheduled and went in abdominally and successfully removed it.

After recovery, her doctor had her wait 3 cycles before TTC and on their second cycle trying they conceived twins.  Then a few years later when they weren't trying, and she was 36, she got pregnant again.  So no trouble TTC for her!

  • camrude - please do not panic when i write this nor should sister be alarmed as this is only one persons experience with fibriods...my friend had a fibroid and it was softball sized and growing.  they first said they would treat it for three months and try to shrink it.  well...they decided against it and a week later removed it.  turned out in the very center of the fibroid was  cancerous tumor (Leomysarcoma (sp?) and 3.5 years later the cancer killed her.  obviously this is a rare case, but its the only one i know about fibroids.  i hate to write bad stories, but i just wanted to say it should be taken seriously.

if you google her cancer (might have to fix the spelling) its SUPER rare...

  • I don't know much about fibroid removal, but it is very, very rare for a fibroid to be malignant.

I found out a couple of weeks ago when DS was born that I have a golf-ball sized fibroid on the outside of my uterus. ?It was weird, because I could feel it just by pressing on my abdomen. ?I'll ask at my 6 week check-up, but my dr. hasn't mentioned anything about having it removed.

  • I have several fibroids.  One of them grew as large as a softball by the time I was due with DS#1.  They all started relatively small so luckily they did not cause me to m/c.  During my 1st pregnancy they watched me very close and didn't allow us to have sex at all and I was told not to lift anything.  My Dr. said that if I miscarry that she would recommend having them removed.  The only problem was that the chances of conceiving do go down sometimes.  Fibroids are fairly common though so don't get too worried.  Everyone is different and only time and situation will tell how much it will effect her chances of conceiving.  Good luck to her!
  • debs - it's my only experience with fibroids.  I dont know what happens to the majority of people who experience them.  i certainly didn't mean it to scare anyone - just my experience.  if i had written the post, i would be looking for as much info as i could find.  i assume camrude is doing the same.  i apologize if i offended anyone/

  • No worries Squishy :-)?I used to work for a cancer organization, so I've heard some rare/scare the pants off me stories and a lot of wonderful/happy ending stories too.

Just going to hope for the best at this point until we know more.
