Would this be fair?

Here is some background to my dilemma.  My dad and stepmom bought a motorhome and are on our satellite tv account for it. My dad paid outright for the receiver and gives us a check, once a year, for $60, to pay us back for the $5 monthly fee we incur to add their receiver to our contract.  At the time, I mentioned that it would be nice for them to chip in a little bit toward the bill, but my dad resisted saying we would be paying the bill anyway.  DH and I let it go and it's been about 2 years.

It is now time for their annual check to us and DH wants me to tell my dad that they need to add some money to their check to contribute to the satellite bill. The bill is only $70 a month. I see DH's point that if the shoe was on the other foot, my stepmom would make sure that we contributed based on previous experience, but I see my dad's point that we would be paying it anyway.

So, wwyd, just suck it up and only have them pay $5 a month for their extra receiver or ask them to pad the check a little to contribute. If so, how much?

  • If you agreed that they would only pay the extra fee it cost to add them, then I don't really think it is fair (especially 2 years later) to ask them to chip in on the bill.

I agree with this but would never have agreed to give them a free ride to begin with!

  • No I don't think it is fair to ask them to chip in two years later. That being said I also think it is crappy that they even think this is okay for them to do. Why should they get free cable?

This is kind of how we feel.  They make more than enough money but are kind of cheap with it.  I felt almost backed into a corner when they asked us and I have a problem with saying yes all the time.  My chaotic schedule is evidence of that!

  • I guess I don't think its fair to ask them now after 2 years, but at the same time, they are pretty much getting free television and I don't really see how they can possibly think that is fair either.

I think you could say "we've been talking about it and it no longer feels fair to us that you get free cable.  We'd like to split the cost or for you to find a new way to get cable".
