More PTing questions...

OK, so I am going to start tomorrow and I have a few questions...

1. Do you reward everytime they go on the pot or just everyime they actually pee?

2. Should I set a timer and put her on the potty every 45 min or so?

3. How many days did it take for your child to be trained for the most part?

 Thanks.

Re: More PTing questions...

  • 1. one sticker for pee, 5 for poop (she would hold it).  Lots of praise and "yayy good try" for nada.

    2. we didn't bother, we did about every hour but didn't really keep track

    3. one barebutt weekend of hourly tries.  Then we left it up to her.  Within 2 weeks she requested underwear for daycare, that was it.

  • 1.  I only rewarded if she actually went.  We would have been in the bathroom 24/7 if she'd been given one everytime she sat on there.

    2.  The first two days, I did set a timer for 30 minutes because she didn't get the concept of connecting the feeling of needing to go with running to the toilet.  And the first time we tried, I found that she was really frustrated with having accidents and less likely to want to try, so I wanted to get her in there before an accident so that she would feel success.

    3.  We started on a Thursday.  By Friday afternoon, she was consistently telling me when she had to go.  No accidents from Friday afternoon on, but she did struggle with going #2 for awhile after she had the peeing down.

  • We just started yesterday afternoon.

I haven't rewarded for sitting, only for actually going.  But, R has been "pretending" and sitting on the potty for several months.  If sitting on the potty is new, then maybe a reward the first few times.

I haven't set a timer, but I just had her go right after she woke up and then based it on that.  She seems to be going every 1.5-2 hours.  So, a little after an hour, I started just reminding her to use the potty if she needed to pee.  If I catch her starting to pee, I remind her and she runs to the potty.

No idea yet.  So far, it's been much better than I though it would be, though.  Good luck!

  • One M&M for pee, 3 M&M's for poop. We also do the pee pee and poo poo dance after each time he goes (he LOVES this). It's gets him excited about his accomplishment.

I reminded him everytime I thought of it (probably every 1/2 hour or so). It got to the point where he would get upset with me for asking if he had to go....lol.

It took him three days (no accidents after the first day) to be completely potty trained. We did just recently go on vacation and he had his first accident in 3 weeks yesterday, but other than that, he is waking up dry from naps and nighttime. It was a breeze.

    Good luck :-)
