I am currently trying to wean my son, so clearly I am not having an issue with him being 12+ months and nursing. Unless I am going away for a couple weeks there is no cold turkey with this situation.
I can see myself stopping BF when the baby has a full, or nearly full, set of teeth, but I might just pump while we're weaning him/her and use a bottle.
And I definately agree with too old when the kid can ask for a specific boob. ::shudders at memory of YouTube video with the BF adolescent::

It wasn't long ago that women BF until their children weaned naturally or they had another child. I think now we're only becoming comfortable with BF again and so we limit it thinking anything more is dirty or has an ew factor to it. I must confess I don't think 5 yr olds should be BF. I don't know I guess I'll have to figure it out.

I'm going to go with, if the kid is old enough to request a specific side...probably too old.
Hahahahaha. I always joke that if they can tell me what they want to eat, and walk to the fridge to get it, they're done.
My mom's rule was: when they baby starts bitting (to get a reaction out of you)...that was 10 mo for me. She said she would have gone a year otherwise.

Can I say, it's a personal choice. If people have a problem, keep it to yourself. I like the stand-by of, "breastfeed as long as both mother and child are willing." That's a case by case basis and suits me fine. I have my limits and other's are longer or shorter...and I don't say sh!t to them if it creeps me out or whatever. It's not my decision. Neither is not BF'ing at all, even though personally I agree w/ "the breast is best." It's a choice, plane and simple.
I think women should continue breastfeeding as long as it's mutually desired by mother and child.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least the first year. According to them, "There is no upper limit to the duration
of breastfeeding and no evidence of pyschologic or developmental
harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer."
The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that children who wean before 2 years are at increased risk of illness.
Finally, some research has shown the natural age for weaning is between 2.5 to 7 years of age.
I've heard that after a year of BFing the milk is like sugar water and is bad for baby and their teeth. Anyone else heard this?
Nope. I don't think anything changes in the milk. But dentists recommend no more night-time breastfeeding (or bottles) after 12 months because of cavities risk. Maybe that is what she is referring to...
Re: Clicky Poll:S/O of S/O re BFing
Ditto.
Yeah me too, I only put that option to be fair!

I agree Moo. 6-12 doesn't seem very long to me.

Nope, never heard of that. My boss is a dentist and my son's pedi. supports my breastfeeding him still.
I have never heard this before, what was the source??
A woman that I work with told me. She has 6 kids.
