So weird...it's like we were scammed but he GAVE us money.

DH listed his bike on craigslist about a month and a half ago. Within a few days, a man has contacted him. He wanted DH to take a deposit on the bike, so we kept the bike, he gave us almost half of what he was asking for the bike, and he was supposed to give us the remainder the next week.

Well, it's been almost 5 weeks now, and we've called and called and emailed and called some more, and we've gotten 3 responses from the guy, all saying "I'll get the money to you _____" and never does, and never calls or emails to tell us why. If it was an issue of just not having the money, we would have been more understanding, at least in the beginning.

Now, it's just plain weird. We have the money, we have the bike (and by the way, we have cash, not some scam money order or something). DH bought a truck, and we'd like the remainder of the money so we can pay our savings account "back". DH had told him that if he didn't have the money to us by today, he would be relisting the bike and keep his money, as per the original agreement. The guy says sure, I can handle that, and now...no contact.  He told DH that he was single and had a really great job downtown, and just wanted a motorcycle to commute on.

I feel kinda weird keeping the money, but he hasn't even asked for it back and that was what they agreed on in the beginning-. He keeps just telling us he forgets to check his email or phone, but for 5 weeks? I wouldn't be forgetting if I had my money at someone else's house AND the item I was purchasing...

  • That is weird. ?I'd relist the bike, and if it sells before the guy gets back to you, just hold his money for him for a while just in case. ?I'd also feel weird about keeping his money in that situation.

I would find a way to give him back the money.  I don't think it's right to keep it.

    ditto

  • Maybe his great job is very demanding...or maybe he's in jail.  Who knows.  I would relist and give him his money back.  Tell him you can no longer store the bike and will be relisting it on such and such a date (maybe 2 weeks from now which is sufficient time for him to come up with the remaining $$).  Weird.
  • I would send him the money back and relist it.  I don't think I could keep the money.
