Is anyone familiar w/ WalMarts $4 prescriptions?

We've been paying COBRA since I left my job last May.  I'm returning there when the school year begins this August.  The ridiculous amount of $$ we're paying for insurance is getting old and i'm looking for a cheap policy to get us through July/August just to "have insurance" and in the event something catastrophic happens.  It probably won't cover the regular dr visits and meds.

My question is... Is the $4 offered to people whether or not you have insurance.  I mean, even if we have insurance, but it doesn't cover prescriptions for the next two months, would I still be able to get it for $4?  (if that med is on the list?).

Re: Is anyone familiar w/ WalMarts $4 prescriptions?

  • If it is on their list...then yes, you get it for $4 (doesn't matter if you have insurance or not).  Also, I'm not sure where you are or if you have Meijers in your area (I know they are Michigan, Ohio and some other states) but they have antibiotics that are FREE...like Amoxicillin (the same ones that are $4 at WalMart and Target!!!).  When I worked for Urgent Care we saw a lot of people without insurance and we always told them to go to Meijer.  Also...Target has the $4 scripts and if you have a Costco...they are less than most pharmacies (for other meds) and you do not need to be a member.

  • I've been using them for my happy pills since I wasn't working and my insurance ended. I would assume you would qualify if whatever coverage you had didn't cover prescriptions. I would call or go by your local WM pharmacy and ask or page our resident pharmacist (you know who she is). I think CVS offers that program too if you want to check them. Thanks for reminding me I need to check on mine since I have insurance again.

Oh, did I tell you I finally sold that organizer? I got $35 for it on CL. Not bad since I paid $40ish.

  • It doesn't matter if you have insurance that covers RX or not.  I have insurance that covers and still just pay the $4.  My insurance copay is like $8-10...or if it is brand name I pay up to $50.
  • The $4 price is the price for everyone.  If you go in to fill a script that is on their $4 list, they don't even run it through your insurance company at all.

  • Go to the Walmart.com website to see the list of covered drugs. You can get the drugs on the list for $4 for a 1 month supply or $10 for a 90 day supply. (This is for what is considered typical dosages. In some cases, some prescribers will have a patient take a higher than normal dosage, so you would wind up paying $8 for a 30 day supply for example, if that makes sense. It's based on the quantity of pills.) If you have insurance, we will submit the claim. If our $4 charge is cheaper than your copay, you get the cheaper price. If you don't have insurance, no problem. You get the $4 price. Easy-peezy.
