Fleas! I am at my wits end. I have put frontline on the cats every month. I spray the carpets with a all stage flea killing spray every month and the bastards just keep showing back up! Our home is on a concrete slap rather than pier and beam so I am assuming thats the problem as the cats dont go outside. I dont know what else to try.
Any ideas?
Re: NBR: the bastards just wont die!
We just went through this and we are now flea free!
I read online that fleas don't like Eucalyptus so I put drops (found at Fred Meyers) in bowls of water, in a humidifier, in the toilets, in the sink filled with water...pretty much everywhere. We only had one cat with them and locked him in a bathroom till he was clean.
I also heard to hang a flash light over a bowel of water because fleas are attracted to the light and will drown in the water.
Frontline for the animals. It sounds like you are not getting the eggs. The trick my mom used was to take Borax and shake it into the carpet. The Borax smothers everything. It works. She used a pickle jar and put holes in the tin and that is what she used to shake it on the carpet.
We have only had a flea problem once, and I wouldn't really call a problem. But something I have found is to vacuum the carpet daily. And if you don't have a bagless then put a flea collar in the vacuum bag and that will kill them. If you do have bagless, make sure to empty it each time, and do it outside!
I've heard neem oil is helpful, but i don't really know what you do with it... man, i'm helpful ; )
We had a big flea problem after adopting our cat. In addition to flea treatment we used diatomaceous earth (you can get it at most pet supply stores, esp. specialty ones). Sprinkle it everywhere the cat goes where there is carpet or upholstery (lift up the couch cushions and sprinkle it there, under the couch, in cat bedding, etc. You leave it for a week or two(?), then vacuum up. It works by piercing the skin of the fleas, so they dehydrate and die. Kills other insects, too. Keep the pets and kids out when you apply it and for a bit after, but once it settles, it's safe. Good to vacuum up to keep the vacuum clean, too (like the flea collar idea).
Also, flea comb (then put found fleas in soapy water and flush or grab with rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton ball) thoroughly and daily. Wash all blankets, etc. that the cat has slept on in the hottest water possible, and dry hot, too, to wash away the eggs and kill the larva.
