HELP: Ideas for 30th B-Day!

DH turns 30 in 2 months. He is really not looking forward to it at all, but I really want to make it a special day for him. Plus I want to start planning now and get things in order since we will have a baby coming a little over a month after that. Any ideas would be great if you have thrown a 30th Birthday or if you have been to one.

I want this to be a day he won't forget for a while. Loaded with family and friends. TIA!

  • Might be able to help more if we knew what kind of stuff he likes to do.

  • I think it would be a hoot to have a b-day party at the bowling alley at lincoln square!  We went there the other night and its so totally 70's I thought it would be a great place to have a b-day party!

  • I'm not really much help here.  DH planned his own 30th B-day party because he wouldn't give me any dates he was available so I couldn't plan anything for him.   He ended up just having a BBQ at a friend's house and invited pretty much everyone he knew.  It was completely spontaneous and it was exactly what he wanted.

My 30th was at the Tulalip Casino.  Just my parents, BFF and her husband and DH were there.

The best birthday I ever had, though, was this last one.  We got together with a bunch of friends and had a Karaoke/Bring Your Own Chinese Food party.   We had people who made Chinese food and others who bought it from their favorite restaurants.  Then we had Karaoke until the wee hours.  It was awesome.

  • Are you looking for theme ideas or location?

  • My 30th birthday party was a swing dancing theme. My friend hired some instructors and every one learned to swing - plus we dressed in vintage attire.

I threw my friends 30th b-day and we had a masquerade ball. It was a blast.

But, both those ideas might be too girly for your DH.

Another friend we did a Poker night, and rented game tables from AA rentals. I think everyone played poker until 5 am.

  • I'm no help here since I'm in the same boat you are.  DH turns 40 2 weeks AFTER my due date.  He wants a HUGE party for family and friends.   ummmm, I don't think I (we) will be up to it with a posible 1-2 week old!

I did start thinking about possible places.  I'm also thinking that he's not going to want to spend as much as he did originaly since I'll be off work until after the 1st of the year.  Backyard BBQ, may be in the cards after all....At least then I can still have most of it catered, or at least Costco trays etc.... Less work for me, and no cost of a place to rent.  He plans on serving his own Salmon as a main course since he'll be catching 30 pounders in August on a fishing trip.

I think that would be a great idea for K.

Or....you could have it at a sports bar? Or the Skate Deck! haha!

  • DH loves everything sports. He loves southern food and mexican food. He also loves video games.

I am looking for themes, locations, anything. Locations if possible not much cost because I think everything going into it will be a good amount.

I like the idea for game table rentals, or even a Kareoke rental of some kind. Thanks, keep the ideas rolling if you have them! =]

  • Wow no one threw me a party for my 30th I took my sister to NYC for the weekend for my 30th.

But we had DH's 37th B-day party at Chopstix in Everett the Piano bar. It was so fun. We just invited everyone and made the reservation everyone paid for them selves. It is 21 and over but everyone had a great time.

My DH never had a big birthday party and ever since I met him, that's all he ever wanted. So I threw DH a huge surprise party at my brother's house. I invited all of his friends, provided food, soda, mixers and beer. If they wanted other beverages, they brought their own alcohol. It was so much fun and he had no idea...score!!

I was thinking bowling, too.  I love bowling (I suck at it).

We did this for DH's 30th.  He didn't want anything big, so we just went with one other couple.  It was a lot of fun.

  • LASER TAG!!!!!!

Seriously, one year both DH and I had our birthdays at the laser tag place in Federal Way.  Rented out their little party room and everyone got to play a couple games of laser tag.  Yes, maybe laser tag is more meant for 8 year olds, but EVERYONE had a blast.  Sometimes it's fun to act like a kid again!  :)

That's the thing with DH. He has never had a big one and always talks about it. So I want to do that for him. The only hard thing is DH looks at the check book EVERYDAY and would know if I spent money so I kind of have to do it in little amounts so he won't get suspicious. And since I am pretty crafty, gonna do the invites through email or make them myself. With food was going to do myself and get a few of my family to help. Plus DH really isn't a big drinker at all, so I was just going to say if people want it they can bring it, but wasn't going to do alcohol. Especially if I have it at a park, they won't let you bring it.

  • I also have a friend who threw her b/f a 30th party at skate king!  She had everyone dress up in 70's attire and it was a blast.  I think it was $15 pp for us to go wasn't a big deal and it was a lot of fun!
