NBR- Someone has been using my debit card

I looked on line at my balances today and saw that 4 charges happened in Baltimore, MD- mean while, I live and have been using it in FL (still have card in hand). ?They charged over $370. ?I am sure more will pop up since there is a delay in posting. ?

I am beside myself upset. I called Visa and my credit union fraud departments, canceled my card and ordered a new one.

Has anyone been through this? ?What did I do wrong where they could have gotten my info? ?Did you get all your money back? Is there anything else I need to do? ?:-( ?It was going to be tight this month as is- now I might be under.?

Re: NBR- Someone has been using my debit card

  • YES! Someone charged $200+ on mine (luckily I caught them early) and I cancelled card and they gave me a temp. credit to my account until the investigated. Once they were done investigating, they sent me a letter notifying me that the temp. credit will be upheld and I kept the funds. GL! Who do you bank with. I was with WAMU at the time.

My moms card number was stolen and sold in the UK, there was like over $5000 in charges. If you buy stuff online etc they can get your number they don't need the card.

I had a friend who this happened to a few years back.  It turned out that a bank employee had been laid off and before he left the office, he wrote down a bunch of ATM card #'s and their pins and used them after leaving.  They eventually caught onto him and he was prosecuted.

I'm not saying this is the case with you, but since you still have your card and it's being used in other states you might want to check into an inside job.

  • This happened to both mine and my husbands cards - They assumed someone "skimmed" one of our cards and then re-digitalized a different card - they were using it for all types of purchases (POS) that's how they knew that they had a card digitalized with our numbers.

Chase refunded all our money within a few weeks.  It's a hassle, but Chase was great.

I did purchase a credit monitoring service through Equifax - just for my own sanity.

    Sorry and best of luck

  • Call the local police department and file a report.  The bank/credit union needed the case report # and they refunded the $ back into my account within a few days.  It happened to me and the only thing I can think of is that someone at work got my card #/info from my wallet which was left unattended occasionally in the break room.  It's an awful feeling!  Has anyone at you know had the same thing happen recently?
  • I have the card in hand and they supposedly have one too! ?They said people make cards all the time.

They charged 70.00 at a gas station, 92.33 at a gas station, 65.03 at a gas station and 142.77 at Home Depot.?I want to kick their ass.

I just hope I get all the money back.?

This has happened to me 3 times and my DH twice, it's so easy for them to get a copy of your card, every single time we have had the money back within a couple of days.  I just had to go to the bank and sign a form saying it wasn't me that made the charges.

  • That sucks. Hope they get all your money back.

This sucks! I'm sorry it happened!! My parents had a CC fraud problem last year, somehow someone got their card # and were buying stuff offline. My dad figured it out fast (thank goodness) but the idiots that stole the number forgot to change the "mail to" address & my dad got a prepayphone from walmart.com (and a few other things) at the house that he of course never bought!

The card company did give them the money back after an investigation.

Saddly this stuff happens all the time. My husband laughs at my b/c I check our CC's & bank stuff online at least once a day. This is why!!

What on earth were they buying at gas stations to spend that much money? Filling up multiple cars and buying snacks?

They charge people 15 or 20 dollars to fill up their car. ?They line the cars up and fill them up. ?I only know this because a girl in my neighborhood used to do it (I never filled up).?

  • This happened to me on my credit card a few years ago.  I was actually the one who caught it, before my CC company.  I called them and cancelled just like you did.  I was not responsible for the charges.  I enrolled in the protection plan for about a year so they could watch for anything suspicious.
