first shoes

OK, up until now, Spencer worn mostly socks, some flip-flops, but nothing that I would really consider a 'shoe'.  He's starting to stand, a lot, with assistance but still standing.  So, my question is, what are the best first shoes?  I noticed he stands a little pigeon toed now, which is something that runs in DH's family, and I'd like to catch it now.  Any suggestions would be great!

Re: first shoes

  • I am not sure if the pigeon toed thing is something that can be corrected yet. I want to say that once Spencer starts standing and taking small steps that you get him a good pair of walking shoes. Stride Rite sells baby first walking shoes that may be what you are looking for. I know that Payless also offers a cheaper version. The SR ones are expensive and since Spencer is probably not going to be taking steps yet may be a waste of money right now.

What I did with Sophia was get her used to wearing shoes by putting her in the moccassin type shoe. Then I just bought her a generic sneaker. She was not allowed in the "crawler/toddler to be" play area at daycare unless she had shoes on so I was forced to start this when she was about Spencer's age so now is a good time. Then once you see him cruising you may want to start with the walking shoes.

    HTH!

  • Pigeon toes are not unusual at this age and should correct on their own, according to most experts.  They also recommend using no shoes and letting the kid learn to walk barefoot most of the time, but if you need shoes (like at a daycare) to use the soft shoes like Robeez or Pedipeds that are most like being barefoot.  Don't use hard soled shoes b/c they are not good for developing walkers.
  • Until he's cruising or starting to try to walk, all he really needs are those mocasin type shoes. Robeez makes them, but Target also sells them in their own brand "ministar" for half the price! Zoe was still just wearing those until a few weeks ago! No need to buy expensive Stride rites yet!

are those the leather ones that are like slippers?  Is it necessary to get them or can she continue in socks?  What's the benefit of getting the robbez/ministar shoes?

The advantage of Robeez/Pedipeds/Bobux etc... is that they do not slip as opposed to socks.

My kids didn't wear shoes until they were comfortably walking.

  • I also have been advised that Robeez and Pedipeds are the way to go if you need to put shoes on your baby. I didn't know about the Ministars though, I'll definitely check them out.

I personally will probably avoid shoes as long as I can until Zachary starts trying to walk or crawl outside the home.

  • they are good for when your kid is crawling in public places, it protects their feet. and also when they are standing, they are less likely to slip than in socks especially on a tile or wood floor. It's also just good practice for them to wear shoes, so when they are ready for real shoes they are used to having something on their feet besides socks!
  • We have had great success with the Ministars from Target - Liam is on his third pair at this point :)
