rent or own? If you rent do you find it imperative to own before TTC? I'm just curious:)

We rent an apartment... but we are moving to a condo that we will also be renting. I am not going to wait to TTC... plus we want to find the perfect house.  We live in Michigan and you cannot sell anything... so we want to find the right one and one we can stay in... I am hoping to buy next summer.

We are renting right now but are buying a house this fall. I would prefer to own before my baby is born.

I see no reason why it would be imperative to own before a baby. As long as you have a house what's the difference?

We own but I don't think that's imperative to start TTC. Everyone is different and it depends a lot on the area where you live, your financial situation, etc. I just think it's important to be able to afford to take care of a baby.

we own.. I agree with pp that you shouldn't feel like you have to own before having a baby. As long as you have a roof over the baby's head, that's all that matters.

We rent but dh is in the military.  We have moved every 6-10 months for the past couple years so we don't plan on buying until we will be a little more settled.

We own...but I think as long as you are financially stable and have room for the baby, it does not make a difference whether you own or rent

I agree. My parents are putting pressure on us to buy (even though my parents brought me home to a rental and I turned out fine:). We won't be in one spot long enough to justify the purchase of a house for the next 5 years.

I'm glad you asked this. We rent, and are trying to buy this summer. I'm nervous that while I think we'll qualify fairly easily, that our mortgage will by much higher than the rent we're used to paying, and we plan on me staying home. DH (and MIL) think we should own before we have a baby, and while I'm with you guys, it's not as easy to convince them. I'm glad everyone is saying that you shouldn't feel like you have to own before TTC; it's making me feel better.

Own x2 (rental and primary housing).

I don't have an opinion one way or the other on owning before TTC. A mortgage does not make you a family.

I rent. I would like to own sometime in the near future, but we don't have much of a down payment saved up and we're still up in the air about where we want to live.

Me too:) We don't know where DH will do his post-doc so we will just keep to the status quo and rent.

We own ... we bought it right after the wedding. In NJ rent could be almost as much as a mortgage payment so we wanted to be smart with our money. We love our house and very happy with our decision.

We own,and for us, it was necessary to own before TTC.  Our apt was too small to add a baby to all our stuff, and renting a 3 bedroom is just as much as our mortgage turned out to be. (3 bdrm b/c we need a computer room)

But now after 2 years of fixing the house, sudden death of furnace, needing insulation, needing house painted, needing unsafe tree down, and probably a new roof...Well, somedays I wish we were still renting.

We own. We decided that for US it was imperative to own before TTC- just one of those things we said we would do before kids (along with having a good amount of savings, making enough so I can stay home, etc.). Looking for/buying a house is really a lot of work, so I'm glad we got it out of the way. Plus when I was renting I just felt like I was throwing my money away. But everyone's situation is different, and for some people it makes more sense to rent

Rent.  We are waiting to own until DH finished school next September.  We are not waiting to TTC, cause we have a 2 bedroom.

We rent but hope to own in the next few years. I ideally wanted to move before ttc but life happens. I've decided life is way too short to keep waiting for all of these things to fall into place. I'm a big girl, i'll deal and make it work

we own. it was a priority for us to own before we TTC, becuase we wanted to make sure we had the money for the down payment and knowing how much money kids take- we didn't want to try paying for a baby and down payment.

it was the right decision for us but i respect everyone else's choices too.  Do what works best for you and the rest will work its self out.
