11 month old still wakes up at night to eat?

Hi, I don't normally post much but I am desperate for some help. My dd is going to be one in a few weeks and she is still waking at night to eat. I have tried everything to stop this. Now I am afraid that there is nothing I can do to undo it!! I tried letting her cry for a few minutes, she just stands up and screams louder and louder. I tried giving her water, she just pushes it away. Last night DH went in there to try and soothe her and she freaked.. She's waking up atleast twice a night now. The times are usually around the same each night, give or take a half hour. So I know it's got to be habit, but how do I break it? I still nurse her, though she has been eating tablefoods for a while now, so I know she can't be hungry (or can she be?). I would like to stop breastfeeding soon, but the way it's going now, I don't see that happening.  Does anyone have any tips?  I am always reading how younger babies are sleeping through the night and I get so jealous. It happened in this house maybe twice!! Thanks in advance!!

I don't breastfeed so I don't think I have any advice for you.  However, I would suggest posting this on the Breastfeeding board too.  They might be able to help.  Good luck.

  • My son was doing this too. Not at the same times each night, but random times and I was feeding him 1 x per night until recently. He increasd the amount of solids he was eating in the daytime and started sleeping through the night occasionally but it wouldn't be every night. We tried the water too and that just made him mad! I did notice that he needs more to eat in the daytime then I used to think. I have to make sure he gets a grain or pasta and a protein with all 3 meals and some dairy with at least 2 meals. Fruits and veggies are great, but very low calorie!

Anyhow, we permanently changed his bedtime routine about and he gets his last nursing of the day before his bath. He quit waking up at night to eat as I guess it broke the sleep association as he was nursing much closer to bedtime.

He hasn't nursed at night in almost 2.5 weeks straight now and he will be a year old on June 4 so I started weaning him down to only 3 breastfeeds per day yesterday (morning wakeup, before afternoon nap, before bath) and he's still sleeping all night. YAY! I just added a snack and some milk in where I used to nurse him after his morning nap.

  • I started to wean my DD onto whole milk at around the same age.  At that point I was BF'ing 4x/day.  The first bottle of whole milk I swapped was the one right before bedtime, because like you, I was frustrated that she was not STTN and waking usually once a night to eat.  So I wanted to see how many oz she got before bed and found that easiest to do by giving her a bottle.

Lo and behold, she started to STTN right around that time...  Not sure if it was the transition to whole milk or if she was just "ready" to STTN.  She was fully weaned by 12 months and has STTN since.

I just want to say, though, that I would not have given up those first 12 months of BF'ing and getting up at night for giving her a bottle sooner so that she could STTN.  I absolutely loved BF'ing my DD!

  • My ds started sleeping through the night around 11 months.  We didn't have a routine before, but started one at 10 1/2 months.  Everyday at 7pm he got dinner, 7:30pm bath, 8pm bed.  Also started giving him 1/2 whole milk - 1/2 formula.  And bought a video monitor to watch him (as he cried it out).

    goodluck

  • opps, forgot.  we didn't give him anything at night when he cried (which only lasted about 3-4 nights).
