Adoption

Just wondering how hard it is...

for a single woman to adopt? I'm working on a creative writing thing and the main character wants to adopt a baby but I'm not sure that's even possible? Sorry if that sounds stupid but I would think it would be harder for a single woman to adopt than a couple. Anyone know about this?

Thanks :)

Re: Just wondering how hard it is...

  • It really depends on the state, the agency, and the particular situation. It can be done, you just have to do your research.

  • My SIL adopted triplet boys and my husband's cousin adopted a baby girl, both as single women.  They went through the foster-adpot program in our county.

That being said, the director of Child and Family Services here quietly passed a regulation giving traditionally married couples "preference" over singles and those in a homosexual relationship.  That regulation was evaluated and determined discriminatory (you think!!!) and has thankfully since been revoked in our county.

Like PP said, it is possible if you find the right agency and situation.

  • Here's an article about single parent adoption (it's on page 8 of the pdf of this newsletter, I think):
