Sophia - A Poll

[Poll]

DD's name is Sophia.  We picked it out the old fashioned way, by looking through the books, making a list and narrowing it down.  I don't personally know other children with this name, but I know it's popular on the SSN list.  I'm curious if strangers may think it's just another trendy name.  Thanks!

Re: Sophia - A Poll

  • I hear it often on this board, but I don't know any Sophias IRL. I have a friend who's thinking about naming her DD Sophie.

I also think there's a distinction between a popular name and a trendy name. Andrew and Jacob are popular, but aren't "fad" names since they've stood up to the test of time. Only time will tell, but my guess is that my definition of trendy names - like Nevaeh (bleh!) and Jayden - might not.

  • I would think you loved it so much you picked it IN SPITE of it being trendy. Most people I would imagine, don't want a trendy name, they just love the name.

When I see people naming their children Ava, Sophia, Isabella, Emma, etc I assume it's because they wanted a popular name.?
  • It's getting more popular, but it is such a pretty, old-fashioned name, which is what I like.

  • It's BEYOND popular in Southern California.  I have a Sophia in pretty much every class I have (I work with 2-3 classes per week when I'm working).  So while it is a classic name, it's very over used in my area right now.  Along with Ella and Conner.
  • You should name your baby whatever the heck you want.  Don't worry about what others might think..........its what's special to you!
  • I would think you just liked the name.  However, I am a little biased about the subject.  DD is Abigail (Abbey), which is also very popular right now.  DH saw it in the baby name book and fell absolutely in love with it; he knows absolutely nothing about names being trendy/popular.  I hesitated for a long time over the popularity of the name, but I don't regret our choice at all.

Sorry, I guess I could have stopped after my first sentence!

This. Especially Isabella. I cringe when I hear it now...it's just SO popular in my area.

  • I see your point about trendy vs popular, but the point is that it is COMMON. I have said this before, but having a common name is annoying. I have a very common name for my generation and I would not pick one for my dd. But the frequency varies by area and I agree I don't know any baby Sophias around here, I do know one in So Cal.

  • I would never assume someone picked a name just to follow the crowd.  I think everyone would prefer a unique name they love - they're just hard to find!
  • Well, I'll tell you why we picked Sophia.

DH and I loved Sophie. We were thinking of naming her just Sophie, but decided on Sophia because it is more formal. Everyone calls DD Sophie, but if she wants to go by Sophia when she's older that's just fine. I work with a lot of kids at church and I can think of only one Sophia other than my daughter.
