XP: Question re: making DS's food

So far we've done mainly veggies, but we're ready to introduce some more fruits now.  When I make/puree fruit for DS, can I freeze it? (plums, apples, peaches, etc.)  If it is okay to freeze, do I need to do anything special?  Sorry if this is a dumb question!

  • Yep you can freeze it. The only thing that I found didn't freeze well was banana. It separated and the texture got gross. Peaches are sometimes so juicy that they fall apart in the food processor but you can either freeze them that way or add a little oatmeal to them. (Peach cobbler! lol)

I found that the blender worked better for fruits since they were so liquidy, the just leaked in the food processor. ?Fruit in blender, veg in processor.

Also, they may lose their color a bit, like peaches turn a little brown but they aren't bad, just got more oxygen in it ( I think that's it)?

  • Ditto pp! ?For bananas, I just mash them right before I serve them. ?

If you're trying avocado, I've found that you CAN freeze it without it turning brown. ?Slice it up and soak the slices in water with just a few drops of lemon juice. ?Then freeze the slices on a cookie sheet lined with parchment. ?Once they are frozen, you can put them in a ziploc baggie or gladware container.

  • Yes, I freeze almost all DD's baby food.  Yes, you can freeze the fruits as well.
  • I also freeze ALL of DS's food. I use our little processor for everything. Bananas turn quite brown if you puree them and then freeze. I've found that if I fork mash the bananas and then freeze them immediately, they retain their color a little better. For me, peaches turn a pink color, kind of like pink grapefruit. DS loves all of it.
