how would you pronounce this name?

Chira

We want to name our daughter after our maternal grandmothers...and DH's grandmother's name is Chira (pronounced like Keira) but I am afraid if and when we move back to the US this will be too hard to pronounce and people might say it like the CH in chair (cheera).  If you saw this name how would you pronounce it?

I'm thinking we might need to change the spelling to something more Internationally recognizable!  TIA!

Re: how would you pronounce this name?

  • I would definitely pronounce it with the CH sound...

this.  and i'm a teacher.  i've seen 'em all and am usually pretty good at getting it right.

  • I would not pronounce Chira like Keira.  The 'ch' would make me say chi-rah.

You can honour grandma without making the spelling the same. Keira, Kiera or Kira would get the right pronounciation.

  • Yeah, I saw Cheera.  You can still name her that, though.  She'd just have to tell people a lot how to pronounce it.  Or just drop the H and spell it Cira.

I'm a 1st grade teacher.  I would try Keira first.  I teach at a low SES school and see all kinds of names.   My name is mispronounced all the time, its a family name.  I'm okay with correcting people.  Spell it how you want.

  • My first thought was Chee-ra, second was Keira.  I think I'd go with a more obvious/common spelling...
  • I'd say Keira, but I had to think about it first...

I saw " Kigh-rah" and then I thought of Chimera, which is one of my favorite words but not good as a name.

Kira, which is how you want it pronounced, is awesome. One of my favorite names.

If the spelling has significance for you, then stick with it.

  • I'm just thinking though... What would honour grandmother more... Her name spelled the way it' supposed to but possibly mispronounced by people that don't know or spelling it a different way but then possibly 'everyone' would pronounce it right..?

Personally if I was to name someone after someone I would name them just that name and so what if some stranger wouldn't pronounce it right the first time? If they are important enough they would learn the right wya to pronounce it. Just my opinion.

Thus I would go with Chira no matter if people in general would pronounce it the right way or not

  • Cheera.

I love the name Keira though. What about making Chira her mn?
