random ? re: mild yeast infections

so a while back i was asking about why sex would hurt.  once upon a time it didn't but has been a prob for literally like 2-3 years now.  among various suggestions was the possibility that i'm dealing with a very very mild yeast infection not causing other symptoms and thus going unnoticed.

this seems plausible to me (as it's not just a lube or size issue, those have been ruled out already) but i remember getting clockwork yeast infections like 5 years ago from my BCP and the OTC creams burning like a mofo when i used them so just buying a kit and trying that isn't something i'm really enthused about.

here comes the question.  so one of my more crunchy friends suggested yogurt.  like not just eating it.  she told me that she's read about the cultures etc and using plain unflavored and she uses organic like stoneyfield farms or something then freezes it in the finger of latex glove or something then hangs out in it and takes a shower after a bit.  i was floored.  but she said it def helps.  has anyone else heard of this or had experience with this or other solutions that aren't the old drugstore standbys?

also - sorry if it's too early for this post where you are!!  (or if you're um, eating yogurt at the moment Ick!)

  • I have heard of this before.  However, I have aversions to inserting food into the nether regions.  SO not happening.  There's such a massive chance for creating other issues.  And, can you IMAGINE what you would say if you ended up going to the doc afterward?

"So, Glad, what have you done to self-treat this condition?"

"Well, Doc, I tried freezing and inserting my morning yogurt up my hoo.  For some reason, breakfast didn't cure my vag issues.  Any suggestions?"

LOL!!!  and this is why we love the glad!!!!  :-D

i saw some kind of homeopathic thing in the same drugstore section called yeast gard - they're capsules that it looks like you just take everyday.. but same sort of thing i worry about what's in it and if it'll do anything to me and if we do decide to give getting pg a try again this next go around is it safe blah blah blah.  basically i'm annoyed with dr's that just say "oh well sounds like dryness you should use lube" and not take me at my word that it is NOT AN ISSUE.  boo.

  • When was the last time you were seen for this, by whom (what type of doc), and did you mention that you were TTC?  I would think that any OB worth their salt would want to rule out an infection prior to TTC.
  • it was closer to when it first started by my last OB because i noticed it the started after i had the colposcopy that she ordered after an abnormal pap.  anyway i've had normal pap's since then with no talk of any other issues when they take a peep and when i brought up the pain thing to her she said sounds like dryness use lube and i was like well i don't think that's the issue and she said yeah that was prolly it so we tried and it didn't help.

i haven't brought it up with my new doc yet because frankly i expected it to be a non-issue after stopping the pill and having my normal CM come back to life if it WAS some kind of irritation of the walls because of dryness or whatever the heck the pill can do to you.  the oops we had was the first time we'd had sex since getting off the pill and i was pissed it still hurt.  but don't want another dr to tell me to lube up again and would rather not go through the hassle of making an appointment and going in and blah blah blah if it's something stupid i can treat myself ya know?

  • Yes, I so get the frustration.  But, since things have changed, and you do want to drink the EFF water, I'd get a second opinion.  Infections can be extremely dangerous during pg.  Never mind the potential challenges that your situation could present in *trying* to get pg.
  • aw!  yeah i guess you're right.  boo.  that's stanky but i prolly knew that.  sigh.  fingers crossed my current OB is more helpful than the last or that i at least suck it up and buy a home kit in the near future.  poor busted hooch.  lol..

  • If this one isn't helpful, keep looking until you find one that is.  There's no reason for you to suffer like this.
  • I had awful, recurring yeast infections for a LONG time.   I saw specialists and the drugs they offered didn't help me.  The OTC stuff only provided relief for a day or two.  I never went the yogurt route, although I have read about it.

What finally, finally helped me was rinsing with warm water once or twice a day, changing my underwear at least once a day (sometimes two or three times) and letting myself "breathe" as often as possible (sans underwear).

oooo - you were the one that suggested the yeast infection thing in my first post about it, right?

did you ever have one where you wouldn't have known it except for interior irritation and not like 'omg this itching is so bad i'm going to die i just know it'?

  • I suggested a specialist practice north of Boston in your first post.  They are fantastic and worked really hard to help me figure out what was wrong.

My infections were never of the super-itchy variety.  Things just felt off all of the time. Sex definitely hurt, primarily at the beginning and end - a burning, irritated sensation.

I hope you are able to solve your problem soon.  I don't look back at that time in my life fondly.

Totally random, but a naturopathic dr. I saw once recommened Candidase to kill yeast overgrowth and extreme limiting of sugar and yeasts.  Just a thought!
