I haven't traveled with them, but I use flats all the time at home and I would definitely recommend them for camping. I think if you tried to hand wash a prefold you might be disappointed with how long it would take to dry -- remember you're not going to be able to wring out as much water by hand as your spin cycle does. Flats dry in a snap, though, since it's a single layer, and gauze or muslin flats would dry even faster than birdseye and are at least as absorbent. Plus you could multitask with them, using them as blankets (even for swaddling) or sun shades. They're really not as hard as they look, and easier to get a good fit with than a prefold. If you decide you really hate them, you can always use them as cup towels instead when you get home.
You could try it out with a receiving blanket first. I've never tried but a lot of people use them for diapers. Or you can pick up a pack of flour sack cup towels at Target and use those.
Let me know if you have any questions. I've been obsessed with flats lately the way the rest of this board is obsessed with GMs and B4s
and I'm happy to pass on the fruits of my research.

::bows down::
(also butting in) where do you get your flats? I would like to try a few, as I have a friend of my mom's who used them and swears that she has the perfect fold.
