It's only too many if you can't accomodate everyone. If there's enough space / food / entertainment then you're ok. Unless that's too big a crowd for your comfort, though.
Plus, do you truly expect every couple to show up?

I have invited about 75 people to my shower .... however I did ask the hosts before doing so to make sure that it was something they can handle. Not only did they say it was no problem but they also said that a nice resturant would be much easier ( even though more pricey ) for them because they dont have to cook or clean up !!! It is a big time in your life .... if you feel those people you want to invite should be included then they shoud be !! You will find a way to make everything work !!!
