If you knew a little girl with this name

Adleigh (Add-Lee) would you be tempted to call her Addie?  With the nickname post, I'm a little concerned about using this name now.  DH and I love it, but I'm not so fond of Addie, and I do not like nicknames.  I know I can't control it in school, but until then, I want them called what we named them.  My family will request our wishes to call her Adleigh, and so far DH's family hasn't called DS Eli, so I'm hoping they will refrain from Addie if we have a girl, but I just don't know.  Sometimes they do things because they know I don't like it.

Re: If you knew a little girl with this name

  • Personally I would never just make up a nickname for someone. I call a person whatever they tell me their name is. If she gets older and chooses to go by Addie then that is a different story, but if not I would never just assert a nickname on someone. If she and her parents say her name is Adleigh then that is what I'd call her.

  • While I definitely strive to call kids and people by the names I'm told, I ABSOLUTELY see people saying "Addie".  Adleigh and Addie are SOOOOO close.  I absolutely see people slipping into it w/o even thinking about it.

ETA:  especially other kids.  think about how kids ennunciate.  I.e. - they don't!  Young kids may very well skip over the "l" in the name and not even on purpose- just because they can't easily pronounce it yet.

  • I wouldn't unless you called her that, but I bet other people would. They sound very similar and people are lazy.?
  • No, I would call her Hadley, because that's a real name, so I would assume that's what you meant (sorry...I don't like made-up names).

We didn't make it up.  It's in our baby name book, exact spelling and all.

  • I would assume that someone at some point is gonna call her Addie. Or, she might call herself Addie.

  • I hate when people say they hate made up names. Weren't all names made up at one point?
  • Thanks ladies!  DH and I really love the name, but I do have this concern.  Our second choice is Emilie (spelled that way because it's a family name).  I'm not sure I'll get him to budge on Adleigh though.

My thoughts exactly.  But we really didn't make this up.  We were looking through a baby name book with DS because we decided we no longer liked McKenna, which was our girl choice at that time.  We saw this and fell in love with it, especially since my mom's middle name is Leigh and we like to tie in a family member's name somewhere.

  • I agree it may be tough for young kids to say properly. How do you feel about Leigh, if they can't say the whole thing.

I like it by the way.

  • I just asked DD, who will be over three when the baby comes, and she can say it properly.  She just started saying her L's not too long ago, so that's a good thing.  I asked DS, who will be just over 2, and to him, it was Ah-ee.

This. There are so many Hadley, Addlee, Addeline, Addlyn, Addison, ect posts on here lately. I get them all confused and mixed up.

i love the way it looks!  i love leigh :)  will be using it as a mn myself.

but when i try to say adleigh, i'm having a little trouble... not that i CAN'T say it, but doesn't roll right.  if i didn't see it written, and you were introducing your dd, and said adleigh... i'd respond, "hadley?"  do you like analeigh?  or something else that adds a vowel before the leigh portion?

yes, i think kids could easily call her addie, even if you and your fam do not.

  • I don't think I would b/c it already ends in an "ee" sound. I would never assume to call someone by a nn unless I knew she had one already. Who knows what will happen when she nis older though. Maybe she herself will like Addy. You never know. That's why I will not use a name that has any possibilities of nn's that I dislike.

Oh, don't name her Analeigh or people on here will say they only see ANAL.  Confused

  • I don't dislike the name, although it doesn't really roll off the tongue easily.  Since I've been trying to come up with names I've discovered I want a name that people know what I am saying.  I don't want to have to clarify what I'm saying or what the spelling is.  I said the name Liam to people at work and had to say it another three times and spell it once before they got it.  I have a feeling that Adleigh would be like that.
