when to cut the watermelon

How do you know when to cut a watermelon?  I know that cantaloupe will start smelling like a melon.... but how do you know when your watermelon is at its prime?

I usually get fruit home and cant wait to eat it and I cut it right away..... then its terrible and hard.

I cut mine the day after I bought it and it was wonderful.  I am going back to buy another one today!

You should cut it now.  I don't think watermellon get "soft" when there ripe, if so it's probably rotten.  They have a VERY tough shell.  I'm sure it's perfect.  If it were truly under-ripe it would be all yellow.

I have heard something about knocking on it to make sure it sounds watery enough. When it isn't ripe, it won't be as watery and heavy and will sound more hollow. ??

watermellon should be heavy for its size. I don't think they get better with age. I say cut it up.

I buy/cut mine when the bottom of it (side that's on the ground) is yellow.  That usually tells me it's good and ripe.

The watermelon will smell sweet and when you knock on it, should sound like a firm drum.  If it sounds flat it's too old.
