Sterilizing bottles

I registered tonight, and boy do I feel confused about everything! And when it comes to bottles, I feel thrown through a loop.

I have a question about sterilizing bottles, and maybe some one knows the answer....If I the bottles in a dishwasher, do I still need a seperate sterilizer? I don't want to register for it if I really don't need it. TIA!

  • If you are planning to breastfeed you may want one of those sterilizer things for the microwave anyway so that you can sterilize the pump parts, or the occasional toy.

Just boil some water! I think sterilizers are just one more way of scamming money out of pregnant women by telling them they "NEED TO HAVE IT"

No, you do not need to sterilize them seperately from washing them in hot water by hand or in the dishwasher.  I did not do that with DD.
  • Sterilizing bottles is NOT necessary if you live where you have a municipal water supply. city water supplies are tested several times a day and are safe unless a boil notice is issued. If you use well water, though, you need to sterilize. Sterilizing bottles is a holdover from the days when cities did not have good treated water--for some reason it's just stuck around. I also learned that a bottle is UNSTERILIZED within 2 minutes of removing from boiling water/microwave sterilizer. I did occasionally use a microwave sterilizer for my pump parts, though.
