Anyone teach exercise classes?

I'm a Jazzercise instructor, and I'm finding it hard to teach good classes and not overwork myself!  I don't want to tell my students that I'm pregnant yet, so they're probably wondering why I'm being a lazy instructor.  I've been wearing my HR monitor to try to watch how I'm working and feeling, but it's just hard to take it down a notch.  I know lots of instructors that have taught through almost their whole pregnancy, and I have NO IDEA how they do it!  I just worry that I'm working too hard.

Anyone else teach exercise classes and can relate?  Just curious...

Re: Anyone teach exercise classes?

  • i don't teach but i go to circuit classes 3-4x a week and i just really watch my HR monitor. try just encouraging them, walking around the class, etc when you are overworked. i just talked to one of my instructors the other day about what i can/can't do and she said "do not do a lot of jumping" and that she did it with her pregnancies and it ruined her bladder control.

  • I taught for ten years.  I have taken the last couple off, but could you take the approach that you are going to walk around and correct form/give tips?  Although that might not work as well for jazzercise???

  • I can relate!  I told my class at 12 weeks, but I felt the same way before that - like they probably thought I was being super lazy.  I teach cardio kick and a strength class back to back.  In Cardio kick, I was getting winded by the time we were warmed up! I either do a low intensity version of the exercise, or I get them going and just coach without participating.  I do that off an on throughout the class, so it's been working well so far.  And now that they all know, they are super understanding about it and will work hard without me doing it, too. (they won't even let me put my equipment away!  I get my music out, put the mic up and come back and they've already put my stuff away!)

Just do as much as your body will let you and your doctor approves. It's hard to remember week to week, but I think the cardio kick is actually easier for me now than it was earlier on as far as being out of breath, but the strength stuff is getting harder (mainly for some of the lying positions). Good luck!

  • Yay, Jazzercise!  I don't teach, but I take Jazzercise and I am SURE my classmates and teachers recognize that I am taking it down a notch or two.  I am getting ready to announce, so soon they will understand why I started wearing bagging t-shirts, went from 3-6 classes per week to 0-4, and why I am working lower impact.  I am still tryin to keep my intensity high, but take out a lot of the jumping and hopping, because that is what is really getting uncomfortable for me.  I also think I need to drop my weights form 5 to 3 lbs.  The 5's have been killing me!
