If you don't mind me asking, what hospital did you give birth and what's the story with the LCs? Just curious since we're from the same area and my sister is in labor at Comm. North at this very moment...
I had him at Community North. They showed up after he was born and tried to get him to feed. He was 4 weeks early, and he couldn't get a latch at all. He ended up going to the Nicu and they brought me a pump and told me to pump every 3 hours (after I tried to feed him) to get my milk to come in. I would go up to the Nicu every 3 hours to attempt to feed him. I couldn't get him to latch, even w/ the nipple shields they had given me. I would call the LC's every day and ask if someone could please meet me up in the Nicu at a specific time (since we were feeding him every 3 hours) to help me. They would tell me to call when I got up there and someone would come. For 2 days, I called every feeding. By the time someone got up there, it was over. Since he was so small (4lbs 9oz) I was only allowed to try to feed him for 15 mins and then I needed to give him formula. He had to maintain his blood sugar before he could go home and they said anything longer than 15 mins. he was burning more calories than he took in. We left the hosptial and I still had no clue how to breastfeed. He wouldn't latch and I couldn't figure it out. I called the hospital after I left and they said I could come back to get help at $50 a session. Sorry this got so long, it's one thing I was upset about. I'm not sure if it ever would have worked out, but the LC's were very hard to get help from after that first time. I will deliver at Comm North next time, but I will be much more vocal and pushy to get someone to help me! I hope she has better luck with them! I'm sure this isn't everyone's experience!!
