North Carolina Babies

I don't know if you and your DH are considering having more kids or not...I'm wondering if your OB has told you what they would or wouldn't do differently with your next pregnancy. ?I always thought I wanted 2 kids and probably will have another (not anytime soon though!), although I've really been going back and forth on this. ?Part of what I want to find out is what will be done differently. ?From what I can find online, it looks like 17P shots and biweekly transvag ultrasounds to check cervical length are pretty standard following unexplained PROM. ?Just wondering if you had been told anything.

Re: **mikey**

  • I haven't really discussed it in length with my OB, but I do want another baby.  I'm terrified of having another preemie though, so I definitely share your concerns.  DH still isn't 100% sure, but we have kindof agreed on TTC again next winter, when Eli will be close to 3.

I haven't done much research on it, but I've also read alot about the 17P shots, but I don't know if that's something they would do for everyone or not.  What's really scary is I did have an u/s just days before my water broke, and everything looked completely normal.  I had my u/s on Wednesday and my water broke on Sunday.  So even if I had an u/s every day, it wouldn't have changed anything.  I guess the whole not knowing why Eli came early is the worst part, because if we knew why we could try to avoid it again.  But like I said, I haven't discussed it at all with him since my 6 week pp check up, so I have no idea.  I don't know if they'd even want to see me or if they'd send me somewhere else.

One thing I have learned since Eli was born is I have hypothyroidism.  I have not discussed this with my OB, and I don't remember if they tested my thyroid during my pg or not.  I'm 99% sure it was tested when we were having trouble TTC though.  But HT can cause preterm labor.  But you can also develop it after childbirth, so if they didn't do the testing during my pg, there's no way to know now if that might have been the cause.  Something else I need to discuss with my OB, and might have to see an RE the next time around.

I do know when we TTC again I don't want to mess around and will probably start fertility treatments sooner rather than later.  According to some people IF increases the risk for PROM, but others say it doesn't, so who knows?  All I know is that I also have alot of questions and would love to hear anything you learn during your research.  I guess we can muddle through this together!

I will keep you posted! ?From what I understand I will have an OB who is OK w/ handling a high risk pregnancy and then go to the perinatologist for ultrasounds and other testing type stuff. ?I've read that some people go into the office to get 17P shots whereas others have their DH's give it to them.

Just curious--when they did your ultrasound did they check for your cervical length? ?B/c if they were just checking Eli out they may have missed a shortened cervix?--I don't know...

Interesting about the HT--hopefully they'll have some answers for you about whether that may have been a factor or not.?

?I'm with you--not knowing why is really hard to deal with. ?I was in for a standard prenatal appt the same day my water broke! I just really don't want to have to go through the whole preemie experience again and that's a huge part of what makes me consider not having more kids. ?DS is such a great kiddo but those first 6 months were absolutely brutal and I'm nowhere near ready to even consider doing it all over again.

?I'm thinking about going to see the perinatologist this fall sometime just to see what the plan might be--I do better when I have more info. ?:)

They did, and the only reason I know that is b/c the tech was new and was being trained, so they did a very thorough u/s and double and triple checked everything just for her to practice.  The tech that was training her was very experienced, so I'm confident they didn't miss anything.  My OB reviewed the u/s later and didn't see anything abnormal either.

I had 0% effacement and no dialation when I went into the hospital either.  They really didn't think I was actually going to go into labor that night, I had no signs other than my water breaking.

My OB's office has a fertility clinic and specialists, but I'm not sure if they have any high risk specialists or not.  I'm not sure how that's going to work for us needing to be seen by both.  I have my annual exam coming up, so I plan on talking to him alot about this then, just to get an idea of how it will all go down, and what if anything we need to do before we actually start TTC.  I'm with you, I want as much info as possible!
