infant belly button ?

Joshua's stump finally fell off today.  (i swear I thought it was never going to, Abyb's did not take that long). Well, he has a really BIG outtie.  I could not remember if this is normal and they just go in after a few days/weeks etc.  I looked it up and it seems that most infants belly buttons are "normal" innies once the stump falls off.  Usually the cause of an outtie is a hernia. Everything does indicate that it is not really a concern that it usually correct itself, somtimes not for years though.  And unless it is red, swollen or looks infected that there is not a reason for worry.

I am just wondering though.  Did your DC have an innie immediately once the stump fell off. (I do not for the life of me remember with Abby)  If your DC had an outtie, did it go in eventually and become an innie? If so how long did it take?

Not that it is a big deal that he has an outtie as long as there is no health concern. I was/am just shocked on how big of an outtie it is, it sticcks out a good 1/4-1/2 inch.

Hmm. Ocho's was immediately an "innie."  I hope everything's fine and there's no hernia!

    This is how DD's is.

  • I'm pretty sure Elena's was an innie from the get-go.  Julia, who took a month to loose her stump, is not really an innie or an outie - it is just right there at the surface but doesn't stick out per se.  And its been like that ever since it came off.

Hope its not a hernia - do you have a 1 month appointment for him to ask the dr?

no, we do not go back until 2 months.  The Pedi asked if I wanted to come back at one month or just wait until 2 months, and I decided that waiting until 2 months would be fine. Now I am wishing i had not.

My advice on this board has pretty much always been "If it bothers you enough that you've considered calling the pedi, go ahead and call!"  They can best guide you. DD's has always been an innie and took the full 3 weeks too. It can be perfectly normal for it to be a kind of big outtie and have it not be a hernia but only a doctor can tell. Sometimes they place the cord clamp a little on the high side (so as not to make it too low) and if their little belly was a little swollen at birth it may have looked like the right spot then but not now. I've heard this is more common with C-section babies (compression?) but I have no clue if that's based in medical fact!
