Does not hold his own bottle

My 1 year old son does not hold his own bottle, nor does he even seem interested in holding it.  When did your little ones start holding their own bottles?

Also if you have any suggestions on breakfast foods I can feed him.  If he has oatmeal or pancakes for breakfast anylonger he is going to turn into  them. lol!!

Thanks!!

Re: Does not hold his own bottle

  • My DS started holding his own around 5 months.  How about toast, eggs, cereal w/milk or french toast for breakfast.

  • Mine never did and never will. LOL! It's not that he can't, I assume, but he's lazy and loves to be fed. He can hold a sippy with handles, though, so that's fine.

I give cheese, yogurt, fruit, pancakes, waffles, Canadian bacon, toast, and french toast for breakfast. ?DS is quite picky, but generally likes breakfast foods.

My DS is almost 15 months old and he has no interest in holding his own bottle.  He CAN do it, he just doesn't want to.  I don't worry about it since he does great with both handled and non-handled sippy cups.

Fruit is great for breakfast...strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cantalope, honeydew, watermelon, pear, peaches, cherries, banana, apple, etc.  DS usually has a fruit with either yogurt, cheerios, or Eggo Nutrigrain waffles / French toast sticks.

  • My DD started at 4/5 months... I don't think she had patience for me holding it!!!  Wink
  • Our pedi said it is a comfort thing for DD to have someone hold it for her since typically we are holding her also. She likes that feeling of being held.
  • DD didn't start doing it consistently (and thru the entire bottle) until about 10.5mos and that was after about a month of practice. I'd always let her start out the bottle on her own (when she was hungriest) and let her go as long as she could, then I'd take over. She just slowly went longer and longer. I always stayed right next to her so she didnt' think her holding her own bottle = mom leaving my side.

As far as breakfast foods go I'd say as long as you're happy with the nutritional content then I'd leave well enough alone lol. Over here we seem to do yogurt and oatmeal every.single.morning but y'know what? Her little mouth opens wide for each spoonful of that yobaby and she gobbles up the plain old oatmeal like no one's business. She gets calcium and fiber and iron AND she eats quickly and happily? psssht, it doesn't get any better than that at my house :) Now watch, I've probably jinxed myself and we'll go back to picky eater syndrome tomorrow!!!!

  • My son never held his own bottle. Maybe its time to just use sippy cups? At first he wouldn't hold them, but eventually figured out he could control it that way and have sips vs. a whole bottle.

As for food, I feed DS banna's nearly everyday and sometimes cereal bars, oatmeal or yogurt.

My older DD never held her own bottle but always did great with the sippy cup, holding it herself and such.  She started on the sippy at 6 months and was off the bottle at 11 months.

  • Thank you so much!!  You all are awesome!!!!
  • DD is still not holding her own sippy cups or bottles.  She likes the Gerber sippy cups without handles and will pick them up and sometimes have a sip or two but then walks the bottle over to me and hands it to me.  I hold it for her and she has a few more sips until something more interesting catches her attention.
