Last skiing AW for the season

There are technically 2 more open weeks for A-Basin this season, but the snow was pretty mushy and melting fast today, so this is probably it for us.

DD skiied from the TOP of the mountain for the first time.  Had to take 2 lifts.  Yes, she was on the harness/leashes, but she was in control, snowplowed, and did a great job negotiating the slushy snow (and even some moguls!).

There were people pond skimming (skiing through a pond) and she thought it was the funniest thing ever. . . even when someone lost it and fell in the water.

Great day!

Re: Last skiing AW for the season

  • That's great! I'm glad you all had so much fun.
  • How cool! You should post some pics! We are chomping at the bit to get DD on skis this winter. She will be 3 in Oct so she should be ready right? Any tips on introducing her to skiing - we don't want to make any mistakes and turn her off before she gives it a chance. I'm so worried she's going to whine and say she doesn't like the cold. This happened to an uber-skier friend of mine with his DS - he was devasted that he just didn't take to it. 7 years later and the kid STILL hates being cold!

  • I will post some pix.

We started DD in December and she turned 3 in March. . . 3 is a great age!

We have really great gear for DD because we do a lot of outdoor activities.  Keeping them warm is the first priority.  Good snowsuit, socks, mittens, helmet (and balaclava if it's cold).  She wears a layer of fleecy long underwear underneath.

We also set our expectations like this before our first day out:  If she does 1-2 runs per day (on the bunny slope) with no tears, we will consider it a success.  Anything above that is a bonus.

Her first day out she did 8 runs on the small bunny slope and asked to go on the "big lift."  She is really motivated by the lifts.

We get her out first thing while her energy is high (and give her lots of snacks throughout the day) and then do a run or two in the late afternoon after she's had a good rest.  She's probably out on the slopes for about 2 hours each of our ski days. . . but we really follow her lead and energy level.

She's been out about 10-12 times this season and at first she wanted to be held under the arms. . . then she wanted us to hold her on the leash (6 foot leashes attached to a harness) and the last 2 times she's skiied by herself from person to person. . . it's amazing how fast they can progress at this age.

We plan to put her in ski school around the time she's 4, so late next season.

So my biggest advice is to set expectations very conservatively and follow their lead. . . and dress them warmly.

  • That all sounds like great advice! We will definitely take her out for the first time on an above-avg (for new england) weather day - that should help. DH puts ski racing on his computer each morning (or did during the world cup) while DD eats breakfast -  it got to the point she was asking for it....he's taking this as a good sign :-)

     will watch for your pics!

  • My DH and I moved from Boston 4 years ago. . . we still love New England.

Can't beat the ratio of good skiing days in Colorado, though :)
