Do you call daycare "school"?

Re: Do you call daycare "school"?

  • To each her own, I guess, but we call it both. DD learns things at daycare, and once she gets into the next room, they start learning things, so I feel it's OK to call it school as what she does there is no different than what my SAH friend's son does at his pre-school twice a week.

I figure it's easier on DD and will mean that she understands that school is just a part of her life.

  • we call it school. it's cute!

    I'm a pt-sahm and pt-wohm.

I call it school. I try to type daycare when I'm on the nest to avoid confusion. But IRL I always call it school.

And technically it IS school. The name of it is St. ___ Day School. So Stick out tongue to anyone who is annoyed by it.

  • I call it daycare for my dd, who is only 13 months. But my ds actually goes to preschool, so we call it school for him. They both go to the same center, but my ds is in their "preschool program." Plus, I must admit, it does make me feel better!

my son's daycare IS school - they learn a lot there - do so much there- it's not just running around and playing and keeping the kids safe while I work... they have a curriculum, etc.... starting in the infant room.

and yes- we call daycare school.

    ditto

  • They call it a X playschool (because it has an accredited preschool), and in turn I call it school. My children are and will continue to be educated in the process of being cared for. I don't have to make myself feel good. So if someone else calls it daycare when referring to my kids, fine. I don't care, call it what you want.

People get riled up over the most inane things.

Do you think I am going to pis* people off with my bumper sticker: "My kids are honor roll students in the toddler 1 class at X Playschool"?

  • I call it school. I am a teacher, so we both go to "school."  Some people laugh when I say it, but thats how I think about it.

Yes.  To me, it is school.  He is there learning, do activities, playing and socializing.  Is first grade not school?  The people that are annoyed by this are probably insecure about the idea that their DC may be missing out on something.   And in some cases, they may be!

Me thinks some women are being a bit defensive. Yikes.

    Me too!

I go back and forth between calling it school and calling it daycare.  It is a school, her "teacher" has a degree, there are lesson plans, and the center is accredited. And I pay tuition.

  • We've called it school from day one  (he started when he was 14 months old). He started calling it "AB" because that's where they sing the A-B-C song. We do it mainly because it's easier to say than daycare, and conceptualize, since he has cousins who go to school.

It used to throw my SAHM cousins and friends for a loop - "He's already going to school?" "No, that's what we call daycare." "Oh, *daycare*" So I know the  sentiment. Not that I care.

Now 3 years old, the boy says work - Daddy and Mommy goes to work, he and the baby go to work, too. It's cute.

And why not? Their job is to learn and play.
