Copperhead - kill or relocate?

We found the second copperhead in a week yesterday.  MH is feverishly reading up on them and it seems that they are born 4-5 in a 'batch' (I'm sure that's the wrong term).  The two found were clearly young (about 12-14 inches) and there are likely more.

MH relocated each of them about 5 miles away in an unpopulated area. But now he's having second thoughts (what if the snakes bite someone, etc). and thinks maybe he should have killed them. WWYD?

Re: Copperhead - kill or relocate?

  • I would kill them (meaning, I would have MH kill them, or hire someone to kill them).  Nothing against the snakes personally but I wouldn't want them around.

  • I would have trouble killing it.  I'm a wuss when it comes to things like that.  I can't even kill the28282838 mice that are living in my apartment.

Can you call the human society and get their opinion?

  • They are poisonous, right?  Definately kill.  I'm all about live and let live until you're talking about poisonous vipers and things like black widow spiders.  Then I'm all stomp on it till it's dead.  Then stomp some more just to be sure.

And please tell me you aren't in New ENgland...

  • I would relocate. ?Be careful. ?I have heard that baby snakes don't have the same control over their venom so it can be more dangerous if you are bit.
  • i would call animal control and let them deal with it.  I'm not touching them to do either.  no thanks.
  • I would relocate them.  While copperheads aren't currently in danger of a threatened population, I'm pretty pro keeping the ecosystem in as natural a state as possible.

  • I would have ran screaming and hid. I hate snakes. Eww.
  • Kill it...skin it...and eat the meat! Can you tell I am from Montana?

We have a lot of copperheads around here too. I'm scared to death of snakes but I also don't kill anything, even bugs, so I would want to relocate them.

Probably this, & made animal control take care of it.

I'd call out a prof and hope they kill it!
  • If you know a snake is poisonous, kill it!  Why are you having to check with nesties on this??  Next time I see a wasp in our back yard, I'm going to run inside and get on my computer before getting out the can of wasp spray.  Jeeze. Confused
  • kill it!! one of DH's workers found behind their business and DH (the wuss) made the guy kill it.

  • If you have seen several in your yard, you should call animal control immediately and have the professionals come out and remove them.  They are very prevalent here in the south, and they are very dangerous.  They are also very territorial and tend to hang around and just keep having babies, especially if there are plenty of places to hide and things to eat near your home.  The last thing you want is your DC walking around outside and stepping on one of them, or worse, picking it up thinking it is a toy.
  • If he encounters anymore, I would call Animal Control and make them aware of the problem. If there are young ones around, that means that there are adults around, and that can spell trouble. Animal Control will know where to look for them, and know how to get rid of them without damaging the ecosystem.

No   I hope your snark is in jest.   We really don't like to kill any critter and I think we are like most people. The snake was long gone before I posted so it wasn't like, 'Oh honey wait! Let's see what the girlies on the Nest have to say!'. My question was about any more we might find in the future. Reading comprehension skillz  - get you some.

For those who said, 'call a professional' - MH thinks he is one, there is no stopping him. He's a nutjob with_shit like this. But I agree with you, if we see another, the professionals will be called. We're concerned they might be living in the retaining wall.  Tongue Tied

  • I am all about serpent genocide. Kill the snake.

Also, when I read your title, I was like "Yes, I would definitely be relocating if I had a copperhead problem." And really...I'm kind of still thinking that.

    Ditto this.

This is exactly what I thought!!

  • Please don't kill them.  I don't love snakes, but I hate the thought of killing them.  Can't animal control help you?

I TOTALLY agree with Lori.  Well, "the me and DD would be relocating to a hotel until a professional (one that was paid) said they were all out" part.  Those little things are MEAN.  Plus, I would never forgive myself if dd got bit and it was because of something that I knew about and could have prevented.

One mean posionous snake is nature, two in my backyard is when I run away screaming taking dd with me.

  • Dh and I had that debate about two weeks ago when I found a rattlesnake in our yard and I captured it. I wanted to kill it, dh wanted to relocate it. I told him since I caught it, I got to decide it's fate and it had to die because it was within 1 ft of my baby. It's dead.
