Have you gone to the movies with your LO?

Tomorrow is our anniversary and we don't have a babysitter.  Also, my husband is working in the evening.  So we were thinking of doing lunch and a movie with Madeleine.  Has anyone done this?  It's a Tuesday, and school isn't out yet, so the theater will probably not be crowded and there will be two of us so we can take her out in the lobby if need be.  If she really isn't having it, we can just leave.

My biggest concern is the noise.  They play the movies so loudly, I'm afraid that will bother her. Thoughts?

Re: Have you gone to the movies with your LO?

  • I personally would not take DD to the movies yet. ?We don't watch a lot of TV with DD so I wouldn't like to have her just starring at the movie screen. ?I think the noise could be a valid concern. ?DH went to a 9:30pm showing of the new terminator movie on Friday night and some crazy people had like a 6 month old with them. ?He said it was the loudest movie he had ever been to and kept worry about that poor baby. ?So obviously, some people take their kids to movies! ?But one movie is probably not that big a deal, as long as you say one of you is willing to take her out to the lobby if she can't deal. ?Happy Anniversary!

  • No but my son cannot sit still for 10 minutes much less an hour and a half movie.  He loves noise though.  The louder the better for him.  If she could sit still I would say go for it!

We have not done this yet, but mostly b/c I know that DD would never be able to handle it.  How does she do out at restaurants?  A 45 minute meal is pushing it for DD and even if we get up and walk around, once she is out of her seat - game over.  Maybe you could do a picnic lunch outside (weather permitting) and then maybe rent a movie and have some drinks when DH gets home?  Regardless, I hope that you guys have a terrific anniversary!  Tomorrow is my dad's b-day and the day I got a BFP for Maddie that day, so the 26th is a great day for us!

  • We only take Zachary with us (1) if a theater is doing a baby movie morning or (2) if we go to a drive-in theater.  Our local theater does the baby movie morning on Sundays and Tuesdays.  They turn the sound down a little bit and leave the lights dimmed so you can keep an eye on your child.  Just about every time we've taken Zachary to a movie, he has slept through about 75% of it.

I don't know if I'd take him to a regular movie though.  I hate to walk out of movies and I don't want to disturb the other patrons.  And the sound is so loud usually...

The theater has stadium seating with those wide corridors leading into the theater.  It's most likely that she would spend most of her time crawling around there (remind me to bring hand sanitizer--yuck) and not pay any attention to the screen.  And I would definitely take her out if she was disruptive or didn't like it or it was too loud.

I think it's a moot point, though.  I don't think my husband is going to give the idea the thumb's up.

I can't find a theater around here that does baby movies or I would totally do that.  Also, there are no drive-ins.
  • I took DD to see Shopaholic and she did great. I nursed her and she fell asleep for the majority of the movie. IDK that I'd do it now, because she's older and needs to move around.

We saw sex and the city when Jo was 3 months old. She slept through most of it but I would not attempt to bring her toa  movie now. It would be chaos.
  • HAHAHAHA! I'm sorry, but I can't imagine anything much worse than that. Oy. Alice would be running everywhere, climbing on to all of the seats. Charlotte would probably cling to me and scream. It'd be a disaster. I waited until my older kids were around 3 years old for movies, I think. By then, they were old enough to understand that they had to sit in their seats and couldn't talk once the lights went down. It was fine at that age.

Is there anything a little more family friendly that would still be fun for you to do?

Well, we could do something more family-friendly, but we really want to go to the movies.  I know I need to bite the bullet and find a reliable babysitter, but I just can't do it.
  • On our first anniversary, which happend to fall on a Tuesday, we took her went to a baby friendly showing of House Bunny like at noon or whatever. It was so cool to go to a movie with her and not worry if she fussed, which of course she did at 3mos old!! The volume was low, the lights were brighter than usual, and it was a really nice expeirence!

I think they do these things all over and a Tuesday might just be one of those day they do that :)

  • OMG. I can't imagine anything more dreadful. ?It would be pure hell for us. ?We would be pissing away the $20 bucks to get in. ?I say go to one of those $1 movie boxes, pick up something you haven't seen yet, spend the extra cash on yummy take out or a fun sex toy and call it a day. ?Then find thee a babysitter.
  • Hey, Tess.

Joseph's first movie was "Leatherheads" with George Clooney at 3m. We had to acclimate him for the new Indiana Jones that was coming out when he was almost 5m. In the last year, he's seen those, "Iron Man," "Incredible Hulk," "Dark Knight," "Traitor," "Valkyrie," "Knowing," "Taken," "Gran Torino," "Watchmen," "Yes Man," "Bride Wars," Underworld," etc.

Okay, "seen" is probably a stretch. He usually conks out within minutes of the credits. The older he gets though, the more he sits with us before he passes out, and he waits for dogs to be on screen. We just say "watch for the dogs, Joseph," and he gets really still and pays close attention...and then passes out.

But we sit in the back, on the aisle, and if he does get antsy, one of us takes him out to calm down, and then brings him back for more popcorn. The popcorn is definitely his favorite part of any movie.

They don't do them everywhere. I've never seen one, and I've got multiplexes 30 minutes away in three different directions, with three different chains owning them, and no baby shows. Ours actually don't do daytime matinees at all during the week unless school is out.

I also never saw them when I lived in Orlando or Pittsburgh.

    We don't have them here.
  • I wouldn't take my son to a movie yet. My oldest went at about 3 1/2 years old and it was a horrible experience for the most part. We went to a kid friendly movie and there was hardly anyone else in the theater so it was alright.
