We are tight on space and storage in the nursery. I am thinking about forgoing a changing table/dresser for a taller dresser with more drawers. Can we get away with changing the babies in their cribs, floor and other places in the house?
With our first child and with our up coming twins we used and will use again the top of the dresser that was in the room. We did not have nor buy a changing table for the same small space problem. The top of the dresser worked great. I got a changing pad and covers and had no problems ever. You can surely get away with not buying a changing table and use whatever surface works best for you. One thing to be aware of esp with cribs, beds, and floors is that sometimes it can be very messy and sometimes you think they are done but they are not. Just make sure that you put something down under the babies like a changing pad etc just in case!!!! Good luck!
We're getting a changing pad and covers for the top of the dresser and skipping the changing table.
Friends of ours with twins said they just did diaper changes in the cribs or threw a towel on the floor in the living room, but I guess I'd be concerned about messes and wouldn't want to have to change sheets if there was an accident.
We were thinking of getting a changing table for the living room and figured maybe we could put toys on it later on, but we might just get the PNP with changing table and use that instead.

the pnp with changing table (in another room) is an option, and like they all said, I would think you could definitely do it wherever as long as you try to protect against messes! i have some low back issues so personally wouldnt want to be having to bend over too far or going up & down to the floor all the time. We're doing the pad on top of the dresser also but sounds like you're thinking of a dresser that is too tall for that.
With my oldest son we bought a changing pad and put it on top of his dresser and also used the changing part of the pack and play downstairs. Didn't have a changing table at all...For the twins we have just been changing them on the floor using a changing pad, definitely didn't have room in their nursery for a changing table or even a dresser (we have their dresser in their closet.)

Thanks for all of the responses! We have a playroom upstairs with a sectional and a guest bedroom as well as our bedroom upstairs near the nursery so there are other potential changing surfaces in other rooms nearby. We are also going to set up a changing area in the laundry room downstairs. I'm thinking about getting a pretty tall dresser so I don't think I can manage a pad on top of it. I'm nervous about not having a changing area in the nursery but when I nannied twin girls I don't recall them having one either.
We ALWAYS change DS on our bed in our room. I used the changing table religiously for the first 6m so IMO it was worth it for the amount we actually used it. We still have the table and if we have enough room in the twins nursery we'll put it in there and use it again. IMO it would be very difficult to change them in their cribs, but there's definitely other places to change them.
We have a changing table in the nursery, but have yet to use it. We use the one on the pack n play in the livingroom 100% of the time. I LOVE having the changer in the PNP. I had no idea when I registered for this specific PNP how much I'd love it. Unfortunately it only goes up to 15lbs. and we're getting there so we'll be moving to the nursery soon for changes.
I have a changing pad on the dresser in our nursery and I never use it! (The cats on the other hand, think it's a great place to hang out...) I generally change them on an ottoman in the living room since we have a one story house.
In terms of protecting surfaces, chux (underpads) are your best friend! We got a huge box of them at Sam's a long time ago and they are super handy for creating changing surfaces.
