If you didn't find out your baby's gender...

What kind of furniture did you buy for your baby?

With DS, we found out he was a boy at our big u/s and bought very gender specific furniture.

I don't mind neutral stuff, but if we have a girl this time around, I'd love to buy super girlie furniture (clear & ornate). But, we are not planning on finding out the gender this time (I want to keep it a surprise).

So I don't know what to do. DO I hold off buying furniture until after the baby is born, or just settle for something more neutral? I know I can accent with gender specific bedding and other stuff after the baby is born...

I am curious what others did who didn't find out the gender.

  • OMG - you're pregnant again?! Congratulations!

I haven't seen you around much lately. Hope things are going well.

We didn't find out what we were having, so we bought white furniture. It's not ornate or girly looking, so it could work for a boy or a girl.

  • We didn't find out the sex with number 1.  We got white nursery furniture and painted the room green, blue and yellow.

  • We didn't find out either. We bought white furniture as well and the bedding was neutral colors as well....Once she was born trust me she got plenty of girly outfits and girly things in her bedroom! It was fun not knowing what we were going to have. It was such a wonderful surprise as we were so happy to have a little girl..
  • We didn't find out and we got cherry furniture with neutral bedding and it looks fine!
  • We bought white funiture.  The bedding was gender neutral that was mostly yellow and green. We painted the walls yellow.

  • We didn't find out till 34 weeks. His room stuff was picked out waay before then. I went with a pooh bear theme that I loved.

  • I didn't find out with #1 and bought wood colored furniture (I didn't know furniture could be boy or girl?) anywho- if you are adamate about having boy or girl specific, buy one of each closer to the due date, then take one back (or have a friend or DH take it back). I ended up with a cute farm neutral bed set. I live in an apt so I couldn't paint.
  • With DS we didn't find out.  We bought cherry furniture.  We didn't do anything special to turn it into boy related but it looks like adult furniture so it will grow with him as he gets older.  Even though we plan to find out the gender this time we will probably do the same thing.
  • We found out with K, but didn't have a nursery set up for him until he was almost three months old. ?It worked out fine since he slept in our room anyway. If you really want to get gender specific furniture, then just wait until after the baby is born and have him or her sleep in a bassinet or P&P.
  • We used DH's childhood furniture ~ honey pine colored dresser and hutch (as a changing table) so we only had to buy a crib...selected honey pine and did the bedding in yellows and painted a sea blue/green.

The nursery has been girlied up with wall hangings and accents. I love that if (future) DC #2 is a boy all we have to do is switch out the easy stuff.

  • We are not finding out for baby #2, and we will be getting whatever furniture we can find at a good price...I'm open to white, or wood tones or even red furniture.  I'm not that concerned about the decor though, so if you are really passionate about that kind of thing, I say wait.  There is plenty of time to put the nursery together after the baby arrives, and you'll be able to really get what you want.
  • Gender specific furnitire?  What?!

We have pine furniture in both girls room but never found out their genders.

  • I think anything except white is gender neutral and really classic. Cherry, Expresso, Black, it can all be made to go either way with gender-specific bedding.
  • The only furniture I can see being gender specific is the fancy ornate white furniture. That seems girly to me. We did black furniture in a bright green room. After DS was born, I added blues and reds to the room. If we had a girl, I would have added pinks etc. Either way I wanted black furniture, it works with everything.

  • We just got cherry furniture and painted the walls a light green.  We got a few Wendy Bellissimo "Busy Bee" things because I am not big into doing a theme or anything for a nursery.  When he's older, we'll probably put more emphasis on decor in his room.
  • We got espresso furniture and plain white crib bedding with a brown trim. The walls are "silver sage" (very pale sage). We will keep that since we aren't finding out about #2 either. We are moving Ryan to a new room with more boy specific decor.

Why would you buy 2 sets of nursery furniture. I just bought a dark cherry (in bio) set that would do for both.

I added a chandelier & accents to the room. But I have no intention of buying new furniture for #2. And we won't find out the gender of the next.

  • We painted the room purple...but like a blue/grape sorta color.  I think it works for both sexes.  Bedding was green, yellow, ivory, as were clothes.
  • We did find out, but all of our big ticket items were still gender neutral, so that we can re-use them with the next baby.

We didn't find out and bought all the nursery furniture pre-baby as well as painted the walls and had a rug. ?I like really clean-looking things so did white furniture b/c i'm personally not a fan of the dark woods in nurseries. ?i disagree with a pp who said white is not gender neutral....many of my friends who have boys have white furniture and it looks great in their nurseries...we could also have easily ended up with a boy - and may next time...it's about the accessories. ?anyway, the bedding and wall art is what we got after our daughter was born. ?our walls are tan with white below the chair rail (there is molding) and our rug is a tan trellis-type rug. ?

  • We did white furniture, yellow walls, and gender neutral bedding (an alphabet, primary color theme).  I wanted to have the nursery set up, so we went totally neutral, which I loved.

If you want to really girly it up, you could always get more neutral bigger stuff and then get two bedding sets and wait to paint or add accent colors until the baby is here... as long as the furniture is set up, the other stuff isn't too much of a hassle (especially if the baby is in your room for a while at the beginning)

     Congrats!
