Adoption

Timing of Baptism

Would you wait until after the adoption is finalized to do his baptism/dedication.?

We have been brainstorming when to do this. We would like to do a nontraditional ceremony outdoors with the minister officiating that married us. He is not our church's minister. We were thinking about following it with a barbeque/party and would make it both a baptism celebration as well as an adoption celebration. Would it make more sense to wait until after finalization? I hadn't thought about it before. ?

Re: Timing of Baptism

  • If there is no chance that relinquishment will be revoked, I would do it whenever you want to do it.

If there is some chance that you might not finalize, I would wait.

  • I would wait until finalization so in your heart of hearts you know it is all said and done.

  • We didn't do a baptism, but our church has baby dedications 2-3 times a year.  When the next one came up after adopting Ben it was in Feb. 2008 and we were going to finalize in April 2008.  We went ahead and had him dedicated even though we hadn't finalized yet.   Finalization in our case was just a legal document we were going to possess after the hearing.  Ben was already ours with no chance of anything going wrong so we felt confident to go ahead and do the dedication.

    Ditto.

  • I think it makes sense to do it all at once...esp if you have family out of town that might no be able to make it there for 2 seperate celebrations!
  • We have already decided we're not doing it until finalization. DH and the whole family are in agreement.

  • Thanks ladies. I don't think there is any chance of us not finalizing, but never say never. Revocation period was over 24 hours after birth and both parents signed away rights.?

I agree with you guys though and think it would probably mean more to do it once we have finalized. We were told that we probably won't even go to court. In our state the court date is usually waved because of how busy the courts are and we are just told when it's done. That seems rather anticlimatic so maybe we will just plan the baptism for the weekend after (or as close as possible) finalization. It sounded like we should get an idea of the approximate date once we hit the 6 month mark (October). ?
