Watering Down Milk?

DD is a total milk maniac.  We have been trying to keep trying to limit her milk to 20 or so ounces, but we're failing drastically.  We're finding that whole milk constipates her something fierce.  Even with eating prunes daily she will occasionally bleed we she poops. Does anyone know if it's okay to water down milk?  She'd still get the same number of ounces she needs nutritionally.  Or does the fat content have to be a certain level ounce for ounce?

Can you give 20 ounces of whole milk a day and substitute 1% for the rest???

  • I would say as long as she's taking in her required ounces, offer her something other than milk (like Gerber prune juice, maybe, to help with the constipation?) or straight water to see if there is something she'll take in place of milk?

  • DS is a milkaholic too.  He'd drink 24 ounces a day if we let him.  We only offer him 20, though (2 x 6oz bottles, 1x 4oz bottle and 4oz in a sippy cup with dinner), and the rest of the time he gets water or watered down juice.
  • As long as she drinks what she needs I'm sure it's fine.

  • We offer water in a sippy cup all day.  She'll take that most of the time.  First thing in the morning, before her nap, and before bed she throws a fit if we don't give milk.  I've tried giving less, like 4 ounces, but she'll flip when it's out until she gets the amount she wants.  Maybe I'll give full strength milk all day and then water down her bottle at night so she can have as big a serving as she wants. Thanks ladies!
