3rd Trimester

Fetus Underweight..

Hello ladies. Ive been on the high-risk board forever now, and just came from my OB with some unsettling news. My fundal height is 1.5cm short & 14oz underweight. . whereas a month ago he was measuring large for term. They said it could be that Im not consuming enough food/juices/milk on top of medication-causing diarrhea (which they've taken me off now), probably coupled with hormonal caused diarrhea the last two weeks. I, myself, lost 4lbs in one and a half weeks. Was wondering if any of you ladies had this happen to you, or know of anyone else's situation mirror this. . and what steps were taken to gain gain gain! I'm almost 34weeks now and he's been 3.1-3.4lbs now for almost 3wks now.. luckily ive had ultrasounds for other reasons . . so that I can even know this weight info. .

People cant believe I'm 8months pregnant. . they say I look so small.. thats really how my whole pregnancy has been. Its always annoyed me, but now its scary! Anyone else gone through this or going through this?

Re: Fetus Underweight..

  • At 33 weeks my LO measured 3 lb 6 oz.  That was my first ultrasound so I'm not sure what he was before that.  Not long after that he had a growth spurt and last Thursday at my 40 week ultrasound he was measuring 7 lb 5 oz.  I also have gotten comments about how small I am, due to the small baby and the fact that I have low fluid levels.  As long as you are eating healthy and the ultrasound shows no problems with the cord I wouldn't worry.

  • I have no experience with this, but wish you the best of luck!  Is your Dr worried?  I am praying for you and your LO!!!!!

  • My LO hasn't been measured since our 20 w ultrasound, but I wanted to send warm wishes your way.  I hope everything turns out well: maybe you'll just have a petite little baby!
  • We've also been having quite a scare for the last couple months as well. My fundal height kept measuring too small. So in addition to the fundal measurements we've been also getting ultrasounds every week to make sure she is growing right. So far she's in the 35th percentile. Doctor says thats good for someone my size. (I was 96lbs PP, then was 89 lbs. the first 3 months of Pregnancy)...so for now , i'm just praying that my daughter will keep growing and be healthy when she's finally ready to make her debut. But hopefully all goes well with you too...i know exactly how scary it is to hear your baby is measuring soo small..
  • Hope all is well.  I look small, but measure ok.  I managed to loose 7 lbs on my first 2 weeks of bed rest, but thankfully LO measured a gain of 1 lb during that same time.  Hope your LO gains!!  My Ds was born in the 5% for weight and 15% for height and he was full term.  So sometimes they are just small.
  • My fundal height was small and continued to be small so the doctor did an u/s to rule out low fluid and any cord problems.  We were measuring under 50% at 20w and by 30w she had a growth spurt.  There is still time or maybe she was just meant to be a small baby.  Or like you have stated, you have had some issues with medication.  If your doctor has not addressed it specifically, try to stay positive.  Good luck and hope everything works out for you.
  • Wow, thanks, ladies for all the info and advice. Its nice to hear what you're all going through and your specific cases. Thanks for the warm wishes and kind words. I hope all of your pregnancies go VERY well and everything turns out right, as I'm sure it will. .  I think back to what my mom keeps saying. . "we never had the technology you guys have today, we never had our doctors doing weekly check-ups, never had specific diet plans or BPA-free nothin', never had groups or blogs or computer sites to compare and make us crazy and more worried than we already were, . . and ALL of us turned out okay.. we just ate healthy and still drank alcohol and smoked with no air condition, and ALL of us turned out okay. . "

These are the words of a 62 year old woman . . who has half a point here. . and I'm trying to see more of her opinion just to make myself feel better I guess. Thanks for all your replies. . . its wonderful to hear we're all in this together!

  • I am 36 weeks today and the Dr tells me today that the baby is measuring in the 12th percentile. Shes only 4 lbs and doesnt seem to be gaining weight, even though I eat everything in sight. I will be going in 2 times a week until my due date to make sure Hadley is ok, I was told to be prepared to have the baby sooner than my due date. I dont want to be induced but if it will help her I will do anything.
I hope you are doing ok.....

IUGR isn't even a diagnosis until you drop below the 10th percentile. Also, unless you have been having regular growth ultrasounds starting before the 3rd tri, growth scans can be notoriously off in the third tri.

  • My baby was at 3rd percentile at 37 weeks. I drank whole milk and chocolate milk everyday. He came at 42 weeks 7 pounds 2 oz
  • And some babies do much better coming early for some reason.

My sister has IUGR and baby came at 36 weeks 4 lbs 6 oz... With in 6 months I was calling her little sumo
