3rd Trimester

anyone else dilated at 33w, make it to full term?

I went in yesterday and saw a different OB (mine was out of town this week) and he checked my cervix. My doc probably wouldn't have done this, but good thing he did! He said I was 1 cm and about 70%. I'm a little freaked out, I don't want to have this baby early! He advised me to take it easy for the next few weeks. He said "do I think you are going to have this baby within the next week? No, but is it a possibility, yes." How scary!

So anyway, just wondering if anybody else has been in this situation and made it a little bit farther?

  • I don't know if I was dilated that early because I didn't get an internal until 36 weeks, but I've been 1-2 cms and 50% effaced for the past 3 weeks.  And there are several girls who were even more dilated and effaced for longer.  I think all it means is that your cervix is "favorable", but doesn't necessarily mean that you'll go into labor anytime soon.  So try not to worry!  Good luck!

  • Yeah I know it doesn't necessarily mean I'll go into labor soon. The OB was just very adamant about no strenuous activity and pelvic rest. So that freaks me out a little! But ultimately there is nothing I can do about it either way.
  • I'm 32 wks and at my apt on wed they did my first internal, and I'm 1cm and have what the dr called a very fragile cervix. So now I have to have an internal done every week and I'm on modified bed rest, but she said that I could stay like this for a while, just to take it easy.
  • With my second I started dilating at 32 weeks.  She was born at 37 weeks.  I slowly progressed and was 4 cm when I went to the hospital when she was born.
  • I've been on modified bedrest since 15 weeks because of too many BH!  My cervix went from posterior, firm and closed at 29 weeks to anterior, soft and 1 cm dilated at 31 weeks!  During this time my contractions started coming at more regular intervals.

I'm now 33 weeks and my cervix hasn't changed!  I'm really hoping and praying that my LO stays in until 37 weeks.  I had my DD at 33 weeks 5 days and she was in the NICU for two weeks!  I do not want another NICU experience, one was enough!

Take it easy and listen to your body!  I think its possible that you can still have a full term baby.

    Good luck

  • People have told me you can be dilated for several weeks or even months.  I woudn't be too worried, that's not a lot of dilation, you have a little more than a month left, so hopefully it won't be too early.  Definitely take it easy like the doctor suggests, at least they should be monitoring you for now on I hope.  I'm surprised they did an internal that early, unless you were having some strange symptoms, I got one at 28 weeks for that reason, luckily everything was fine.  They don't do exams until 37weeks at my practice otherwise.
  • When I was pregnant with DS, I was put on modified bedrest at 32-33 weeks.  I was 1cm and 70% effaced, just like you.  My ob wasn't freaking out like the other doctors around her were.  She told me to just "take it easy" and took me off work.  I still ran errands and did some cooking and cleaning.

I was induced at 40 weeks and DS never dropped down resulting in a c-section.  The kid was definitely not coming on his own.  So yes, I starting dilating at 33 weeks, and had a healthy, full-term 8lb baby.

    GL!

EDIT: I did continue to dilate.  They checked me every week and by 38 weeks, I was 4cm.

  • I am in the same situation.  I have already started to dialate.  However, I have no restrictions.  I am still working full-time 12hr shifts.  He predicted within 4 weeks or so.
