NPR: KCSWifey stuck in London

Sarah, her hubby and Logan are all stranded in London after being robbed at gun point.  Does any one have any suggestions for her on what to do.  She told me through facebook.  They took all of her money and her phone.  I'm just trying to figure out things to help her out.  I suggested going to the embassy, using the police or hotel phone to call family back home, calling her bank at home to see if they can get money from their account somehow.  Any other ideas or has anyone dealt with something similar?

  • Did you see Ruby's post below? She says that someone has hijacked Sarah's facebook account and is trying to get  money from all of her friends. I don't know which is true- if she's really in trouble or if someone is just scamming her friends???

  • That's the best thing she could do is go to the Embassy.  They will need to show some kind of ID so hopefully they had photo copies of their passports safe in their hotel room.  The Embassy will tell them what they can do next.  Hope they are okay.

  • It's not true.  This happened to another friend of mine recently.  You need to de-friend her so the hackers don't figure out somehow to access your account (this may not actually work, but this is my attempt at protecting myself).

  • Now that I really think about it, it has to be a scam. Why would she tell you through facebook? Wouldn't she be calling her family, and all the other things you mentioned? I know if I were stranded in another country, I wouldn't be trying to get my facebook friends to send me money.....

  • That is what my husband and I thought and that is why I did not send her money and I came here thinking she would have posted here as well and was surprised she had not.  I was not going to send money and so that is why I made all of those other suggestions.  I thought maybe she was just not thinking straight because of being robbed (that would be terrifying).  I just was having trouble thinking she could not just call her parents or someone she knew IRL.
  • Thanks Martha, I unfriened her (I know that is a made up word).  Hopefully that protects me.  I would have thought she would have told us if she had a kick ass trip to London planned too :)
  • Yeah, I could tell by her facebook page that she was not in fact in london. I asked the person why she didn't call me, knowing that Sara does not have my number... the person said they wanted to but their phones were stolen. I called them a liar and they unfriended me!
  • Thanks for the heads up!  I thought the whole thing was weird and random and so that is why I did not just send money and instead kept giving other suggestions

  • Wow! That's crazy. Never thought that a facebook profile could be hijacked!

For my other friend that this happened to, they also got her email and other accounts.  She's had a heck of a time...

  • Yeah I just changed all of my passwords.
  • Definitely a scam. Earlier today one of her IRL friends wrote on her wall that someone had hacked into her FB. Said she was off getting her nails done with friends and he was on the phone with tech support trying to get to the bottom of it. His wall post is gone now.
  • and besides what mom of a preemie would take their baby to London..imagine all of those germs on an International flight! eeek!!! lol!

  • Yea and hardly anyone has guns in London. You'd be much more likely to be held up with a knife or just pickpocketed. Crazy though - makes me nervous about FB.
