When did you get your first cell phone?

I was a freshman in college when I got my first cell phone.  It was the huge phone that was the size of a maxi-pad box, and it had one ring and no other features at all.  I used to put it on my desk in class so people would stare at it and be in awe of it (they weren't, of course).  I think my plan was about $60/month, and I had maybe 100 minutes of time.  Also, I roamed everywhere except my home city, so I always went over my minutes and had huge bills.

What a sham that was back then!

Re: When did you get your first cell phone?

  • I actually didn't get one until like 2004 (so I was 22.)
  • i was 17 when i got my own phone and quit carrying my dad's.  it was a nokia with interchangeable face plates.  mine was zebra :)

it had a simpson's theme song ring tone that i downloaded for $2 or something.

  • Oh yes, I remember the face plates.  When I finally got a new phone, I would always get the interchangeable face plates.  I also had an animal print - maybe it was a cheetah?  I think it was yellow and black.

When I was done with my driver's test, my mom got me to open my trunk and my phone was in there!  I was so excited!  Oh and I had the purple face plate...I went through a big purple phase in high shcool.

  • The summer before I started college and I paid for it myself. I had a Nokia with a pink sparkly face plate. It baffles me that people now give them to kids 12 and under. I saw a 10ish year old talking on one while riding his bike the other day. Oye!

  • It was after I got married to my ex, so I was maybe 20 or 21? Probably around 1998 or so. I barely remember.

ETA: I had a pager long before I had a cell phone. I recently had it reactivated, too. Can't believe it still works after 15 years.?

  • I had one my sophomore year of high school! so that was 96.

wow...yeah it was gi freakin normous! But I was one of the first kids to have one, so I was sooooooooooo cool.

    bwa hahaha

  • I was 16. I asked if I could since I had a job and my license so my dad took me in and co-signed. I had 100mins and I think it was about $25/mo. Just a simple black nokia with the interchangeable face plates.

After car problems and flat tires all around the Houston Metro, my parents got me a honkin' huge phone. That was in 96, I was 17. I didn't get my own phone until I was 25 and married.
  • I still think cellphones are a bit of a sham.  WHy should both ends have to pay for the same call, txt, picture.   When you call long distance the person you're calling doesn't get charged!

I think I was 22 when I got my first cellphone.

  • I was 17. I paid for it myself. It was a Nokia 5190 (that everybody had) and had the changeable faceplates and I, too, had purple, and I loved it.

  • I rocked the calling card until I was a junior in college. 1999ish. Then I met DH and got a cell phone so we could talk.

I think my calling plan was about the same as yours. Like 5 minutes and I roamed everywhere. lol

  • I was 16 and had a Mitsubishi phone. It was the size of a Nokia only with a longer antenna. Awesome.
  • When I started driving at 16.  There was no way my parents were letting me drive aorund Altanta without one!  I had the same Nokia with a flourescent blue plate for forever.  I have no idea how much it costs - I think my parents just added me to their family plan.

1999, I was 19.  I was the first of my siblings and my friends to get a cell phone and I thought I was so cool!  It was a teeny tiny Nokia and I loved it (the only other cell phones I had really used were my parent's gigantic Motorolla flip phones).  I would always get new interchangeable plates.  The novelty of it wore off after a year or so and I realized how annoying cell phones were.  I kept it for another couple of years and then decided I was done with cell phones.  I didn't get another until the end of my pregnancy and we felt like we needed to get them.

I still think cell phones give people an "excuse" to be incredibly rude and they irritate me.
