"The Business of Being Born" by Ricki Lake...WOW!

DH and I watched this movie last night and it was GREAT! Very impressed with all the information it provided. I already decided to have a natural home birth for me and my daughter. We are SO excited about it! If you haven't seen this movie, I recommend watching it! Especially if you are skeptical on what type of birth you want. It may help you with your decision.

We have also watched "Pregnant in America" which is a really good documentary as well!

Happy watching! :)

  • Great, it's in our que!  And I've only heard good things about it.  Good luck with your home birth!

  • I watched it this week as well. I would highly recommend every woman watches it no matter what type of birth they want. It was great & very informative.

Where did you get the dvd's from? Rent them from the library?
  • We watched it a few weeks ago and loved it too!
  • I honestly watched it and thought the opposite- it made me POSITIVE that I did not want a home birth. More power to you if thats what you want though!

My DH started watching the part in the beginning where they talk about all of the horrible side effects of drugs and decided he thought pain medication was bad- then left before they show all the women in horrible pain having their babies. It convinced me I want drugs! It also convinced me I don't ever again want to see the image of naked Ricki in a bathtub having a baby.
  • We saw it a few nights ago too!  I found it more informative than alot of what's out there.  I'm glad we saw it sooner than later.  I'm not doing a home birth, but am definitely looking into taking some Bradley classes.
  • Our local LLL group had a viewing of the tape and I thought it was very informative.  I don't want a home birth, but I do wish I could have a MW, but we don't have any around here.  So my current plan is to do most of the labor at home before going to the hospital.
  • My friend gave it to me to watch when I first mentioned that we were off birth control.  I went from thinking "Stab me in the back!" to having a midwife & planning on a med-free birth at a birth center in 2 hours.  VERY powerful stuff!  And it made so much sense.

  • I loved this film as well!  We are having a home birth for this baby and wanted to before watching this, but it had a lot of good info in it.  To each their own, and it definately isn't for everyone, but it just really makes sense for some of us.  I think it was wonderful that Ricki was willing to show the world her intimate birthing video without things being sensored and IMO it was beautiful.  I think giving birth is one of the most beautiful things though, Ricki Lake or whomever it is :)
  • I loved it too. I've seen it four times and Pregnant in America once. But I thought the Business of Being Born was very powerful and informative. I wouldn't base all your decisions just on that- do your own research too but that coupled with the things I've learned in the last several months have made me 100% sure I don't want a hospital birth :)

She's also written a book which is out now called "Your best birth" but I haven't read it yet.
