How often do you veer from normal bedtime?

DD was up late last night bc we were at my mom's. She was about 1.5 hrs past bedtime by the time I put her down and she didn't fall asleep right away. I always feel so bad! My brother's kids were all up and they have a 9 mos old. I don't do it very often, but I feel really guilty when I do. She was acting fine, having fun playing with her cousins.

Re: How often do you veer from normal bedtime?

  • The timing of our night time routine varies quite often so DS's bedtime will vary up to an hour or hour and a half. DH doesn't get home at regular times each night so that screws up our routine. No matter what, I try to never have Nicholas up past ten (and that's pushing it).

Funny, I was thinking about this exact thing last night - posting about the timing of our nights being all over the place.

  • During the week he is almost always in bed by 8:30 unless we have something going on like you did.  On the weekends we let him stay up later since he doesn't have to get up for daycare in the morning.

  • I think there's much, much worse things you can do to mess your kids up besides letting them stay up late once in awhile, esp. if she doesn't seem to be super-draggy the next day or anything. We don't have a set bedtime for every night, though he usually goes to sleep at about the same time most nights. When he hangs out with his cousin, or we're traveling, all set times go out the window, though. He seems to make up for late nights the next day during naps.

  • We don't do it often, but we also feel bad sometimes, but it's usually because he's having a good time with something.

  • It's very rare that I keep her up past her bedtime.  She never sleeps past 6:00am, so she just ends up being all cranky the next day.
  • We end up keeping DS up a little late every other week or so. He doesn't seem to mind.

  • I usually only let her stay up on weekends, otherwise she's cranky for daycare.
  • We never do, but that's just our style (and dd's style, too). It's certainly not the worst thing in the world, esp if your dc seems to be happily playing! You just weigh your options, like everything in parenting. If staying up later wins, then you do it and go with the flow. :-)

It depends on what we have going on. The last two nights we were out of the house for different things, so we didn't get home until after his usual bedtime. He's usually fine, but gets really sleepy in the car on the way home. He's usually tired enough that he just wants to go to bed, so he may give us a hard time just because we're taking too long in getting him there!

We aren't very scheduled people.  DS generally goes to bed around the same time, but if it is later than no big deal.  He usually sleeps later or takes a longer nap the next day.

  • We don't have a set routine with her.  I usually get her jammies on about 30 minutes before I plan to put her down but sometimes she lasts longer and sometimes she is ready now.  She usually begs at the gate when he is ready for bed.
