Question for sushi lovers

Hi ladies,

So DH and I were at our favorite Japanese restaurant last night with our DD and we saw a couple sitting next to us giving their 18 mth old son sushi and sashimi! I am talking raw fish and all. We love sushi and sashimi but we always bring food for DD or order some kid friendly meals for her. I think I would be comfortable giving ehr some of the sushi rolls which are cooked or contain just veggies but DH doesnt want to because he pointed out that the board and knives they use are contaminated with the raw fish.

So i'm just wondering- would you give your DC sushi and if so when?

Thanks!

Re: Question for sushi lovers

  • It would depend on the place. I would probably give DS a sushi roll with raw fish, but not sashimi.

  • We give DS sushi. He loves it. We go to the freshest place in town, so I am not concerned.

  • Well, DS wouldn't eat it, I'm sure so that's easy: no, I wouldn't give it to him.  But if he would eat something more than cheese and bananas... it depends on the sushi restaurant.  I would probably consider it.  I mean, if I'm eating there then I trust them...

Think about it this way: in Japan, what do their kids eat?

    Thanks ladies!

I totally agree with you- it certainly depends on the place and you are right Mama Jan- the kids in Japan eat it and they are fine :)

  • DS loves sushi, though I have never given him raw fish. I usually order him a roll with tufo, yam and avocado in it. He chows it.  Not to say that they wash the knife after every cut, but I know most places run the knife underwater so it cuts the wrap more easily.

My older DD had sushi when she was around 2 1/2.  We only gave her cooked stuff or veggies stuff and we had raw stuff.  I didn't think it was an issue and I know tons of others who do the same.

  • I would be surprised to learn that good sushi places don't wash and keep separate their knives and boards for slicing fish, from knives and boards that are used to cut vegtables and cooked foods.

  • We gave it to ds early on and now it's his fav food.  He begs to go out for Sushi. (He'll be 6 tomorrow)
